Bella Italia is a wine store as well as a restaurant. The owner is a typical warmhearted Sicilian woman. While selling the products of her home country and offering a creative home-style cuisine on an upscale level she transfers the Italian spirit to Germany. “Bella Italia Weine” was run for many years in a small living-room-like place with a very personal atmosphere. To extend the sales area as well as the capacity of seats she decided to move to a new location.
The house was conceived as a container sitting lightly on the land for habitation or the dream of habitation. The intention was to reinterpret the New Zealand building tradition – the crafting of wood – the expression of structure, cladding, lining and joinery in a raw and unique way. The construction is reminiscent of the \”trip\” or \”rafter\” dams common in the Coromandel region at the turn of last century. Heavy vertical structural members supporting horizontal boarding. The unadorned natural timber, a sustainable and renewable resource, provides a connection to nature and the natural.
Heatherlands is a substantial addition to an existing house, built in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Dorset Devon border. It responds carefully to the folding of the landscape and roof pitches of the existing house, The folds create splits which highlight views, both concealing and opening to them. A new living room forms a transition point between the old and the new, collecting reflected views and light. Situated to the West of the existing house, the structure takes the stance of a traditional outbuilding, acting as a paddock boundary whilst protecting the gardens. The addition defines a new approach to the building, entrance court and outdoor terrace to the South. Adopting a number of sustainable strategies the building includes passive ventilation, sustainable materials and highly insulated construction. The existing building is wrapped in shingle, which will weather together with the new larch rain screens, covering the addition.
Situed on a very small piece of land, the project has been enriched by the resistance from the site to the elements of the mission brief. First of all, this « family crèche » is a living space where the children thrive and a workplace for the staff. The building is the set for this environment in every aspects and needs but also in its poetical dimension.
H-ORANGE is an independent house featured by the character of its site, which is located next to a small field and large woods, although it is placed in the center of Tokyo.
To emphasize the scene of the woods and big blue sky above the field, west side of the second floor is widely opened with horizontal windows, and a large open-air terrace is located to surround the floor including the living room. With this arrangement, the residents can enjoy the harvest of the vast space above the field. But the view of the field itself is not really beautiful because it was insensitively walled by bricks and these walls seemed to give closed feeling of the place.
Rather than imposing our own designs unilaterally, we think of clients as equal partners in the process of discussing requests and problems, which are then resolved through design and planning. While the end product of this process is a physical structure, we think of our fundamental role as designing human-to-human and human-to-environment relationships.
Our goal is to create architecture whose meaning and purpose is derived through ongoing communication with clients.
This house on the shores of the Golfe du Morbihan, not far from AURAY, was built using organic architectural principals with a concentration of green energy components for maximum efficiency without resorting to technical sophistication. Completed at the beginning of this year, the house is situated in a region benefitting from oceanic climate conditions. The project was born of the owners’ desire to build a new house on their property in BADEN, incorporating a landscaped garden and a natural, chemical free swimming pool. These were created before construction began on the house in collaboration with a designer and a landscape gardener. The garden was designed to provide protection from Westerly winds with a vegetable garden to the East. A distinctive ambiance emerged from this new, natural environment surrounding the construction site.
This garden in San Francisco has dedicated areas for entertaining and children’s play, which are defined and navigated by an innovative arrangement of local and sustainable landscape materials. Cor-Ten steel boxes serve as retaining structures and planters, extending along the site’s perimeter and penetrating the surrounding wood fence. The garden is an abstracted allusion to the dramatic topography of the city itself.

In Innerberg, Switzerland, on a former wood work site, a new apartment building has been designed. Based on an existing volume of 3 meters height and a depth of 20 meters, a flexible living space appears where once carpenters and joiners used to build furniture.
