Casa Lama in Mallorca, Santa Ponsa

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Located on the rocky coast of the Balearic Island of Mallorca in Santa Ponsa, not far from Palma, this family house is pushed into a steep hillside, celebrating its Mediterranean proximity. The design responds to the site’s foremost demand, which is to open itself up to the seascape. A succession of terraces modulates the terrain from the street level to the bottom of the site, defining areas in which the house ties in with spaces outdoors: a sculpture garden, a dining loggia, a sun terrace, and a pool.

House in Nagaoka, Japan by Daigo Ishii + Future-scape Architects

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Article source: Ishii + Future-scape Architects

It locates in the downtown of the city with 300,000 people in northern region where it snows heavily with 3 m deep at maximum. The family is composed of grandparents, parents and 2 children.  The building of the laundry factory and shop that the client family run was left and only a part of the house was rebuilt.

The factory and the house were not connected due to the building regulation that controlled the direct connection between the old building and the new one. Instead, between both buildings, an alley covered with big eaves was disposed. The eaves that is covered with prevent the alley from the snow in the winter and the alley functions as semi-indoor space for connecting both buildings.

This house is located in Eifukucho, Tokyo.  We designed this for a couple with a child.

The site has three significant characteristics.  First, it is located in an upland residential area with an excellent view.  Second, its shape is unique, like a flag and a staff.  Third, it has a long driveway, longer than 15 meters.

Article source: Takehiko Nez Architects

The Japanese title “in kyo” is derived from a calm life apart from the active world for the rest of their days. Excessively ornamented mansions showing off surround the site in a rich green residential area. This modest house concealed its appearance in plant open to a neutral space such as a courtyard, a terrace, a garden, and the sidewalk between outdoor and indoor without steps.

Student Salon in London, UK by Feix&Merlin

THE STUDENT SALON NOW

The LSE’s student salon is currently an unsuccessful space: Its walls are cluttered with unsightly alarm sounders, fire extinguishers and cable trunking, a big vending maching in front of the window blocks views in and out of the space and the big recycling bins are in everybody’s way. The lighting is mismatched and inappropriate for the type of use and the furniture is neither inviting nor comfortable. The space is quite simply not very attractive.
