A dwelling for a family of three located in a residential district in Tokyo.
To live in a multi-storey dwelling in a dense metropolis like Tokyo is somehow similar to living in a large tree. Within a large tree, there exists few large branches, of which endows numerous qualities; -pleasant places to sit, sleep, and present places for discourse. While these branches are individual places under protection, they are simultaneously equipped with mutual relationships that allow one to sense the presence of one another across each branch. A network of relationships interwoven across many places throughout the branches. A proposal for a landscape where the duality of opposites; individuality and holistic co-exist through relationship.
The Killarney Ice Rink + Lobby project is a replacement of an existing ice rink and lobby at the Killarney Community Centre in Vancouver that is comprised of a swimming pool facility, an ice rink, a gymnasium, and other activity spaces. The renewal of the Killarney Community Centre complex improved access to the facility in order that it may continue to serve its vital role as a key social hub of the Killarney neighbourhood. The arena was designed to act as a short-track speed skating training venue for the 2010 Winter Games. After the completion of the Games, the international-size ice surface was converted to an NHL-sized rink with seating for 250 spectators for use by the community.
In 1999, unlicensed treasure hunters unearthed a remarkable archaeological relic: a 3,600-year-old sky disc made of bronze inlaid with gold. It depicts complex constellations and the symbol of the solar barge representing the sun’s nightly passage from west to east. An architectural competition was launched to design a public archaeological centre and an observation tower that would showcase the disc and come to symbolize the region.
The original 1860’s home sits modestly on its block. Humble and unassuming, its appearance defines its cultural significance; the workers cottage preserves a ‘moment’ in the rich, blue-collar heritage and character of Balmain. Preserving and restoring the integrity of the existing cottage as part of the streetscape and the eclectic, urban fabric of Balmain was always fundamental to the design. Any addition needed to be sympathetic, sensitively yet distinctively bridging the divide between new and old.
This building which has grand stairs is composed of duplex house and a cafe. The site is facing the shopping street leading to the Hikone castle from Hikone station in Shiga. The owner wanted a cafe space on the first floor, so the approach was needed to the third floor. Considering the daily uses, the grand stairs were surrounded gradually around the building.
Hewitt Studios have just completed the HCA Hub building which forms a new front-end facility for the Hereford College of Arts. The proposal delivers much-needed cafe, exhibition and admin space in a striking new volume. With a strong sustainability agenda, the structure is formed of glu-laminated and mass-timber and the space is naturally ventilated and day-lit. A reflective pool is used to both animate the space and mediate sunlight.
The showroom of the new Light Center Speyer, situated in a factory building, was to be designed as exhibition space, consulting area and meeting place. Here, a frame generating interior design synergy effects was to be created for all latest light trends, technologies and light designs. Its sophisticated structure was to build the backbone of the entire light exhibition, but at the same time was never to overshadow the priority of the lighting objects to be exhibited.
This urban loft space for a single man occupies the entire top floor of a 1920’s concrete frame structure in San Francisco’s Soma neighborhood. The space, essentially a “toolbox” for the owner’s urban lifestyle, is unique in its adaptation of commercial and institutional materials and components to residential functions. Off the shelf laboratory cabinet modules form the kitchen, a customized computer floor forms the sleeping platform, and a precision aluminum framing system creates the enclosure and adaptable framework for an “electronics laboratory”. In some cases, these modular components were customized to specific client requirements.
Mid-century modern architecture in California embodied an authenticity unencumbered by historical kitsch and evoked an optimism for the future, while taking advantage of the unique light and climate of the region. This extensive remodel of a 1962 tract house in San Francisco sought to maintain the mid-century spirit of the house, while adding a new level of refinement and grace.
This house, designed for a Danish consul and his wife,was built as a weekend getaway and a venue for informal entertaining. Sited on a sloping lotwhich opens to spectacular downslope views over the Pacific Ocean, the house gently backs into an existing grove of redwood trees, thus providing intimacy and a “deep woods” feeling toward the rear of the house. The design embodies a Nordic sensibility to light, material, and lifestyle, while respecting the architectural forms and rustic materiality characteristic of the famed Sea Ranch design tradition.
