UGC Vélizy 2 multiplex cinema in Vélizy-Villacoublay, France by Atelier Architecture Lalo

Wednesday, May 22nd, 2019

Article source: Atelier Architecture Lalo

In the redevelopment project for this shopping gallery, Unibail Rodamco West field and UGC decided to create a new multiplex cinema of national stature for UGC Ciné-Cité with 18 theaters and 3,800 places.

The theaters are laid out around suspended decks in the curved volume of an impressive envelop made of glass “scales”, developed by L35, the shopping gallery architects. They like cinemas along a street. They are accessed from above, with the exits on the ground floor. Interiors are subdued, with floating, pleated black ceilings. The project is designed to highlight the use of raw materials and sleek finishes.

Article source: Didzis Jaunzems Architecture

Multimedia dance performance Both Sides is created as the culmination event of the Latvia’s centenary. Through the music, choreography, scenography, video and light projections, the story of the emergence of Latvia and experience of the last hundred years is told. 2000 m2 large stage is designed in the shape of Latvian flag. The flag is used not only as a symbol of the nation, but also as a space making element. It creates dance floor for large scenes of groups of dancers and smaller spaces for soloists. The polygonal surface of the scenography works also as a giant video projection screen for Latvian history photo and video interpretations.

Article source: DDAANN

Palmovka survived! Palmovka pulses…

After a big flooding in 2002, the theatre was affected by a second flooding in 2012. Even though the small Rokytka river did not cause as much damage as Vltava ten years earlier, the theatre had to be renovated all over again. The restoration of the technologies situated in the basement took more than two years. However, Palmovka has lived through all this and decided to refurbish the entrance spaces of the theatre including a box office, a café and a new façade.

Santa Claus Village

The city of Rovaniemi at the Arctic Circle, the Finnish gateway to Lapland, was razed in 1945 by the German army. It was rebuilt according to plans designed by Alvar Aalto, who also constructed several buildings, particularly dwellings, as well as the city’s arts centre, library, municipal office.

This small city of 58,000 inhabitants is well-known in that regard and is visited by architects from all over the world. The northern lights, natural resources and log houses, together with the legend of Santa Claus, have transformed the city and its region into an impressive tourist destination.

The international airport has been hosting British Airways’ and Air France’s Concordes ever since 24 December 1984!

The Santa Claus Village opened its doors in 1996 and now serves more than 500,000 visitors a year.

There has been a steady increase in the amount of housing units and typical tourism services being developed, but there are still no cultural facilities.

Oodi Helsinki Central Library in Finland by ALA Architects

Monday, February 11th, 2019

Article source: ALA Architects

Oodi represents a new era of libraries. The newly completed building in the heart of Helsinki consists almost entirely of public space and offers a wide selection of services. It will become the new central point for the city’s impressive public library network.

The design divides the functions of the library into three distinct levels: an active ground floor, a peaceful upper floor, and an enclosed in-between volume containing the more specific functions. This concept has been developed into an arching form that invites people to utilize the spaces and services underneath, inside and on top of it. The resulting building is an inspiring and highly functional addition to the urban life of Helsinki and the Töölönlahti area.
