Article source: h2o architectes The refurbishment project was carried out between July 2016 and October 2019. The brief was to improve the public reception area and the working environment. We set out to consolidate the structure, enlarge some of the spaces, update some of the technical installations, and to create a connection between the various areas to give overall coherence to the museum. As the museum remained open to the public throughout the project, we had to complete the operation without disturbing visitors or staff. The refurbishment involved work on all floors and at every level, from relaying the foundations to the design of the furnishings and the signposting, and included demolition, decontamination, and creating new floors.

Article source: Fivedot The design of the VAVA House emphasizes the creative ways families share space and help each other grow, learn, and play. Located in Seattle, Washington, the clients asked Fivedot to design a house that reinforced a connection to their neighbors and their new community. In response, the design team flipped the typical arrangement of a suburban house which normally is closed off in the front and more open to the rear. In contrast, the 3,643-square-foot home is designed to open onto an expansive front patio with multiple gathering areas which then cascades down to a small park across the street. A custom charpai (swing) anchors the covered front porch which also contains a firepit and a heater making it a true four-season space.

Article source: UNStudio Ben van Berkel: “Shopping malls are the public spaces of Chinese cities. These retail complexes are not simply places to shop, they are all-in-one destinations for outings and social gatherings. They are also places where culture and commerce merge and where architecture can express this expansive condition.” The best of both worlds Collaboration was key for the creation of a symbiotic relationship between the commercial aspirations and the architectural interventions. While Nihon Sekkei were asked to develop the outer shell of the retail center, UNStudio was tasked with fleshing out the mall as a placemaking destination for customers and the larger community. This included the design of the inner courtyard and its facades, the full interior of the mall and a public rooftop terrace.

Article source: ERRE arquitectura The project for this newly built Private Terminal proposes a clear and decisive geometry defined by a single volume (120 x 47 meters) in which the exterior metallic materiality that surrounds the building unifies its various functions and structures. This skin, which in some areas is micro-perforated to allow natural light to enter the interior, gives the project a unitary industrial appearance, whilst being dynamic and variable changing according to time and sunlight.

Article source: Sara Acebes Anta The house is located in a special enclave, surrounded by nature, which is part of a small town in the outskirts of the city of Valladolid. The area is unique because of its proximity to the Esgueva Valley and the Duero Canal so framing the landscape was one of the main objectives of the project. The project embraces the scenery around it. Large windows open up directly to its surroundings and frame the local pine trees.

Article source: Martin Duplantier Architectes This redesign project in the Porte d’Italie quarter subscribes to a rich and ambitious urban dynamic that gives a sense of pride to the footpaths, to the presence of greenery, and to landscaped urban connections while strengthening the new quality of life that is offered to the inhabitants. Affirming the centrality of the Porte d’Italie and the entry into the new central green space, the project recreates a desired urbanity. At its prow it develops a “signaling” façade that plays with differing volumes through the development of winter gardens that are adapted both to their context and their intended usage.

Article source: ALA Architects The newly opened expansion of Helsinki Airport brings adventure and romance back to air travel. It also improves the functionality of the airport, built in multiple phases starting from the 50s. In 2016, the airport operator Finavia launched a design competition for the expansion and modification of terminal 2. The competition task included relocating the departures and arrivals halls to a new building so that the existing departures hall of terminal 2 could be turned into Schengen gate areas. The 43,000 SqM departures and arrivals building comprises two distinct volumes; the first defined by its wooden ceiling, the second by its blue color. In addition to the departures and arrivals halls, the first volume contains a multimodal travel center, and the second the areas for security control, customs and baggage reclaim. As the new building connects directly to the old one, it follows the traditional logic of separating the flows of departing and arriving passengers onto different levels.
