Article source: Olson Kundig

The LeBron James Innovation Center at Nike World Headquarters (WHQ) celebrates and advances the company’s foundation of innovation. One of several new facilities on the WHQ campus, the facility’s prominent, central site establishes Nike’s ongoing research and development as the heart of its new campus.

The 700,000 SF, LEED Platinum certified building, which for the first time unites over 700 staff from innovation teams previously spread across the Nike campus, is designed to foster cross-pollination of ideas. An open, four-story central atrium removes physical barriers to collaboration and creates a bright, welcoming center for engagement and spontaneous encounters. Dedicated spaces for chance interaction and co-working punctuate the atrium, showcasing these activities to encourage a culture of participation. The atrium also provides staff and guests an intuitive system for wayfinding throughout the building.

Attic Apartment with a Black Box in Libeň, Czech Republic by Komon architekti

December 8th, 2021 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Komon architekti

We are in the attic of a 1930s townhouse in Prague Libeň. An apartment was built here in the 1990s. But there were too many rooms, more than the client needed, anyway. The joy of open attic space was lost in the clutter. Our task was to find it again.

The height is an essential quality in any attic. With that in mind, we open up the living room to create a double-height space accentuated by a tall bookshelf on one of the walls. In the centre of the apartment we insert a new core: a black wooden box to conceal a small bathroom, make up the stairs and catwalk on the second level, while still allowing daylight deep into the entrance hall. This way we simplified the layout without resorting to structural changes.

The site’s expansive “Sankaku Hiroba” (triangular plaza) atrium roof, along with associated renovations, offer a sustainable model for addressing an emerging problem for Japan’s cities: how to carry out renovation projects on large-scale buildings using good maintenance practices. The project also represents a greater societal effort to enliven the urban business district and enhance its value as an accessible gathering place.

Bank Sabadell Space in Madrid, Spain by mateoarquitectura

December 6th, 2021 by Sumit Singhal

Banc Sabadell Space is housed in a 19th-century building, opposite the National Museum of Archaeology. The green area in front of the museum dialogues directly with the garden situated at the other end of the branch office.

From the outside, the window, raised above the level of the street, directly shows off the workplace, in an abstract, professional but sober environment. The large logo applied to the glass, designed by Mario Eskenazi, introduces a filter between inside and outside.

House in Limassol, Cyprus by Vassiliades Architects

December 6th, 2021 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Vassiliades Architects

The design of this residence in Limassol, is identified by modernistic archetypes, while minimalistic morphological choices were made, in order to distinguish its pure architectural features, which led to a result without unnecessary decorations and exaggerations. The composition of two basic volumes, which are identified by their function and material – white color for the communal spaces, exposed concrete for the private spaces, constitutes the main idea of the project. An important part of the composition is the creation of a small atrium on the ground floor, which improves the natural lighting conditions of the communal spaces and improves the natural cross-ventilation conditions. At the same time, the 1st floor’s volume is projected at the southeastern side, thus creating a covered outdoor area and providing sun protection. Finally, the bioclimatic elements used in the design of this house, led to its classification as a nearly zero-energy building (nZEB).

The 15-storey building mixes 120 apartments with ground level commercial units and a bar and terrace. Casa Huolpoch in Mérida, Mexico by Workshop, Diseño y Construcción

December 6th, 2021 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Workshop, Diseño y Construcción

Casa Houlpoch is an old Yucatecan house from the end of the last century that gets its name from a snake from the region that regularly “visited” the property’s ruins.

Behind its colonial facade, this house accommodates four bedrooms and a studio apartment, with a total of 315 square meters of construction.

Upon entering the hall, we are welcomed by an old cast iron lamp (very common to observe in the nineteenth-century houses of the city) that hangs from the original metal beams that together with the white wooden beams embellish the high ceilings of the residence.
