London Research Office in England by The Office as a Project

September 5th, 2019 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: The Office as a Project

This project, for a London-based infrastructure research organization, was guided by two fundamentally practical needs:

1. Maximizing natural light & sense of space – While only 4,500 sf, this primarily north-facing mansard space was required to host up to 45 workers at peak moments. A sense of space & daylight were thus primary concerns. Glazed or mirrored partitions throughout maximize the sense of space while the orientation and design of elements in the space serve to maximize daylight. Nearly all elements (curtains, partitions) run north-south in an effort to maintain as much northern light. Despite the apparent contradiction, these strategies enable both openness and privacy.

Gunston Place Residence in Raleigh, North Carolina by Clark Nexsen architects

September 5th, 2019 by Sanjay Gangal

Article source: Clark Nexsen architects

This renovation and addition project transforms a typical suburban colonial house into a dwelling that is open, naturally day lit, and engaged with the landscape, garden, and sky. Located on a steep forested corner lot, reforming the landscape was a critical component of the project to anchor the project into the hill side and to create a new terraced garden. The existing garage was demolished and the vernacular form was extended to the garden to create a new two story transparent entrance and living area with expansive views to the garden and sky.

The Threshold, The Secondary School in Buenos Aires, Argentina by Paralelo Colectivo

September 5th, 2019 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Paralelo Colectivo

On this occasion of having to work with the expansion of the school spaces of a secondary school educational institution, we think it is fundamental to rethink and to deepen the meaning of the school in the times that we find ourself living in. We understand that formulating new proposals for these types of spaces has a direct impact on the future understanding of public spaces, meeting spaces and the city.

The school is in some way the first place, the threshold, where a person assimilates a contact with the public space, with sharing, with the socialization of the places of transition where one develops life.

Using wood in an innovative and expressive way, Bavnehøj Allé Youth Housing seeks new and ambitious standards within affordable youth housing. Bavnehøj Allé consists of 40 one-room apartments on 38-45 m2, with an impressive ceiling height of 3 meters. All apartments are accompanied with either a generous balcony or terrace. The apartments are detailed with honest materials such as natural wood and raw concrete (load bearing construction). The building is a simple composition of two diagonal blocks connected by a centrally located gallery on all floors. Using sustainable New Zealand pinewood for the lamellas it creates a unique patchwork pattern, which contributes to a distinct, vivid and warm expression on the façade. Likewise, it also adds a semi-transparent extension of the apartments that embrace privacy as well as providing an active and living façade.

Almanatura’s Offices in Arroyomolinos de León, Spain by inN arquitectura

September 5th, 2019 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: inN arquitectura

For over 20 years Almanatura has been working to provide the inhabitants of small villages with the right tools against depopulation. Its headquarters, in Arroyomolinos de León, consisted of an office in an upper floor over a garage full of memories. Lacking enough space, their managers understood that the time had come for the functional expansion and aesthetic renovation of the office.

The intervention optimizes the use of the ground floor -the former garage-, proposing flexible and adaptive solutions that respond to a very demanding program of uses. This is the area of natural expansion of the office, it will be here where the new employees are installed. This fulfills the socializing aspirations that connect the space with the neighbors of Arroyomollinos, a main objective of the reform and crucial step for the internal cohesion of the team. The wide diversity of uses demanded the continuity of the diaphanous spatiality of the former garage. Only mobile elements are used, such as artisan blinds, to create a subtle distinction of areas.

RCF Office in Curitiba, Brazil by AP Architetos

September 5th, 2019 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: AP Architetos

How to insert an object in the context of an avenue dominated by green and trees? The RCF building seeks to dissolve into the landscape of av. Getúlio Vargas, Curitiba, Brazil, dominated by vegetation. Thus, it would make a hybrid between object and landscape. In this way red appears as a counterpoint, as presence.

The project was born from the positioning of the apparent concrete structure on the perimeter of the building. This solution, traditional in Brazilian modernist architecture, which also serves as a vertical brise, frees up the internal space that free of structural elements enjoys broad future flexibility. From this action, the construction process made the act of filling the void of the structure. Thus, between the openings were positioned glazing frames and modulated windows with maxim-air frames that allow opening even in typical rainy and hot summer days. In the east and west direct insolation facades were placed metallic shutters for better solar control. The building also has green ceilings, north and south facades with double ventilated facade in ACM. AQUA Certified Building. The plant has slight curvature to accommodate the narrow terrain and respect the setbacks required by legislation.
