Located in a region marked by diversity and in constant development and movement, the bar emerges as an urban breather, for lovers of art, drinks, cuisine and architecture. Space is shaped and designed with the collective concept, in which different sensory experiences are shared. It’s an invitation to pause and reconnect amid the daily rush within a big city.
The design came from an old building that once had uses as a residence, music studio and law firm, until the current owners opted for a bar. As the structure was of self-supporting blocks, for the new openings and connections of the environments, metallic reinforcements were needed to expand the spaces. From this party we use metal as the design of the environments, designing from tables, chairs, doors and decoration.
Located in the middle of the Atlantic Forest, on Itamambuca beach, in the north coast of São Paulo, the house was conceived to provide comfort in a warm summer while optimizing the light from the North face during cold winters.
The project is distinguished mainly by the visual impact of the proposed volumes, which besides the plastic appeal, cooperates functionally with details of comfort and efficiency of the house. In addition to influencing the volumetric conceptualization of the project, a cobogo-lined face marks the entry with double straight foot that includes the cantilevered mezzanine.
The upper volume is clad in wooden brises, houses the rooms throughout the intimate area.
In a slightly uphill corner plot positioned perpendicular to one of the main traffic routes in the center of Cesário Lange, a city near the state capital of São Paulo, five warehouses were established to absorb various types of commercial and service activities.
The initial premise for the project was flexibility, mainly due to the lack of definition of the programs that the modules of just over 90sqm would host. Initially, it was thought that these warehouses would be occupied by uses such as convenience store, pharmacies or small workshops, but it was not known how the building would be welcomed by the population of the city. In order to ensure that this uncertainty did not limit the commercialization of the spaces, the architectural design intended to be as flexible as possible, allowing a diverse range of uses and activities to be held inside the spaces. In addition to that, since the beginning of the design process the tight budget for construction stipulated by the client was considered, aiming a low initial investment and a fast financial return with the incorporation.
With a facade extended to the full width of the plot, the AA House was organized according to an essential set of overlapping volumes that, through the structural plans highlight, sought to light the composition.
The parti was based on the inversion of the traditional flow of middle of the block lots, bringing the leisure to the frontal façade, allowing the direct access to it and emphasizing the social interaction of the family, raising it as a highlight element that integrates the other areas of the house.
The original topography of the land allowed the building to be constructed on the upper part of the lot, letting the ground floor to be almost one floor above the street level and the pool to have an infinity edge; below, on the subsoil, it was sited a leisure floor with cellar and sauna. On the first floor, there are the private rooms of the house.
The 100 sq m retail restoration project for Selo brand of handmade shoes inspired MNMA studio to create a kind of brief escapism atmosphere.
The studio’s core process of developing ideas from outside to inside and the pursuit of a fluid circulation led to the final layout and the sidewalk alignment as a continuum, so to offer seamless accessibility for all.
The ceramic was the starting point of this project. Widely used as covering on façades, floors and walls, the ceramic allowed to explore many textures and different characteristics in each situation that it was employed.
On the façade, the first volume is coated with light bricks and contrast with the higher volume with dark bricks. A composition of three staggered volumes allowed the facades a volumetry that softens how tall the residence is.
The client, who had recently sold his publicity company, asked us to design an office. The main question was to be a place that would make him leave the house to work in new projects because of its pleasurable and comfortable space. The renovation project started with the merger of two office units into a single space. In the first visit to the building, the circulation spaces called our attention because of the materials and spatial quality. We then decided to extend the outside corridor to the interior using the same kind of wooden materials. The new interior corridor acquired a double use: as an entrance and reception area while still preserving the work, materials storage, library and wet areas.

The Brazilian, indigenous at first, but not only, mixed through dozens of generations, in an ethnic pluralism, bringing an unique diversity to our people, strength in a fascinating narrative about the roots of this country, becoming memory from the Brazilian identity, reminding us of what’s more precious: our rich nature, as generous mother, provide us the primary foundations of survival, in a fascinating invitation to a healthy relation with the environment, settled in respect and harmony with nature.
This lush nature is inserted on site, since way before the idea of an occupation. An organic composition, which main axis is the Mucugê river. The rain forest flourishes in conjunction with the “mangue” (a kind of swamp endemic for this region, which hosts a unique biome), between the famous cliffs of Arraial D’Ajuda. The 200 meters of beach take us to the unforgettable horizon offered by the Atlantic Ocean, on which, about 500 years ago, the portuguese “caravelas” came from the west, beginning a new phase on Brazilian history. This richness of memory and diversity could not be ignored, opting, thereby, for the preservation of all native vegetation, using the structure of the old hotel to build the new one on the same places as the old buildings. The landscape architecture takes that into account. Felipe Fontes puts down a composition in frank dialogue with all local flora, aligning his interpretation with the native.

The modern cities, so consolidated in their centers, almost leave no room for expansion. However, it is a mistake to think so, because there are small urban slots that can be adapted, if you have a vision of urban and commercial architecture.A small service door, formerly unusable by the restaurant next door and seemed to have no grace at all, has been seen as a potential spot and turned into business.
