The HLM House emerges from a client’s request to build a retreat on a natural area in the outskirts of the city of Santa Maria, in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The idea was to provide a place where one coul find himself in deep contact with the landscape, near enough from the city so working was still possible. From the begining, the challenge found was how to build something that could rise in the landscape as if it had always belonged to the place.
AP Arquitetos was founded in 2010 and seeks to establish a contemporary architectural language, experimental and still focused on local and historical values. We understand architecture much more as a methodological process in which several professionals act together. With this vision we can reach new ideas and concepts that can be applied in a practical way and with a high degree of innovation and experimentalism. Our process works each project in a unique way, that is, with a “tailoring” thought. The firm has projects in several Brazilian cities besides Peru, Italy and the USA.
The construction site is a shared area of three houses, belonging to the same family, in a gated community located in the north of Florianópolis island. On that same space there was an old covered yet open-sided barbecue place. The family grew and so the need for a more comfortable lounge area was required.
“Nothing is invented; there is a past to everything.”
The expansion project of the Egrey store in São Paulo happened intuitively, thinking first of the contact of the architectural object with its immediate urban context. The main point of contact between the interior of the store and the outside environment is its sidewalk which has been transformed into a large continuous plane. The connection between the two existing volumes that compose the store is given by the white metallic paneling as a more aseptic background that values the large transparent and translucent openings.

The challenge of designing a new home for one of the largest collections of photography in Brazil, until then kept away from public knowledge, was accepted with great sense of responsibility to display this historical record. The art collection consists of more than 2,000 pieces including historical names such as Steve McCurry, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Marcel Gautherot, who share space with other leading artists in contemporary production – among them are André Liohn, Claudia Andujar, Rosângela Rennó , and others.
The Mororó House is in a mountainous region, 180 km from the city of São Paulo, known for its low temperatures. The architecture sought to create generous internal spaces for the cold days, such as, for example, a cozy living room and an enclosed bathhouse with a pool, where the views can be appreciated while being protected by a skin of glass.
“Suzana only thinks of the house, she is in love with it”. Suzana’s ex-husband cannot get it out of his mind that the new house – conceived by them both – meant the end of his marriage. The ex-husband’s jealous looks are meant for nobody else other than the straight and modern lines, “cold, tedious and without life”. While images pass through the architecture he distills his fear of the construction and elaborates about the new life that Suzana will be enjoying at that place. “Where is Suzana now?” She couldn’t be in any other place except that house, where Suzana’s love is so transparent.
