The building is an atelier and residence for a couple of painter and a designer. It is a space to spend their whole day with their only son and will be used to regularly exhibit works as a gallery and host a party. Therefore, the atelier and the residence will be used multi-dimensionally by shifting boundaries depending on usages. In order to house various activities, extra air volume and spatial intonation were sought. By distorting the inside of one big volume, we searched for a vibrating space that responds to the weight of activities.
The Harmony between Architecture and Belongings across Time: A Former “Kenban” Turned Into a Home.
Kinosaki Onsen, located in Hyogo Prefecture, is one of the leading onsen areas in Japan, with a history of over 1300 years. Just a short path in from the main street of this onsen city is a small stream, along which stands a former “kenban” (a place for geisha performers from the onsen to gather). Built 50 years ago, and surrounded by a bamboo forest, we converted/renovated this building into a residence.
The 70-years old house was inherited from Owner’s aunt, who bought the original structure to teach Tea Ceremony. A new living quarter was added later to complete this wooden single-story building. It had been left as storage for years and was too damaged, yet Owner chose to keep the old characters, despite cost & time, than to build a new. Inspired by his wish, the renovation began not just to restore but rather to create a space where the old section merges into the new in a harmonious way. The “Koumori-An” house offers the concept of “Value in Keeping” which no new house can imitate.

This nursery school in Sakura, Chiba was planned to accommodate 60 pupils.
Seiyu-Kai, a local social welfare firm specializing in elderly care facilities approached us for this project. The overarching concept for this plan started with an idea: “a nursery school is a large house.”
Surrounded by mountains and forest, the southern area of the site rests on a gentle slope. Putting this topography to use, we designed the school room to resemble a large set of stairs.
The property is in the old quarter where there are used-to-be-stores and shops along historic Tokaido road. The father of the owner also used to run tobacco shop there. The project this time is to replace such old building with a two household residence in which the parents’ household and child’s household can live together.
