IN SUSPENSION in Montreal, Canada by Naturehumaine Architecture

Saturday, May 30th, 2015

Article source: Naturehumaine Architecture

The client wants to transform the last two levels of a building to create living spaces for her two athletically inclined children, who are now grown adults. The primary goal is to create a shared living space in which all utilitarian functions are shared but which still allows each person to have privacy. The architectural concept consists in removing the floor currently separating the two levels to create a wide-open space in which two large boxes appear to float in mid-air. These suspended boxes, adorned with unfinished plywood panels, each contain a bedroom and a bathroom. This configuration creates three gaps, each being two floors high; the centre gap becomes a physical exercise room with a pair of gymnastics rings. The whole structure is connected lengthwise by a block that is painted black; the block accommodates different services, including stairways, a shower room and part of the kitchen. A large island with unfinished wood painted white delineates the kitchen space, with sliding lacquered bookshelves underneath the wooden boxes.

Holy Cross House in Montréal, Canada by TBA / Thomas Balaban Architecte

Tuesday, February 17th, 2015

Article source: v2com

Recipient of the Residential space 1,600-3,200 ft2 Award at Québec’s Grands Prix du Design 2014.

Located in the city’s up and coming Southwest neighbourhood this 300 m2 detached house hides a rich spatial complexity behind its tough working class façade. Turning to the neighbourhood’s post-war veteran’s home as its formal point of departure, the architects set out to make a house that simultaneously fits in and stands out from its heterogeneous context without resorting to mimicry and without sacrificing the contemporary nature of the project.

Bourdages-Cloutier Residence in Montreal, Canada by ADHOC architectes

Saturday, January 31st, 2015

Article source: ADHOC architectes

The Bourdages-Cloutier residence is a major apartment renovation where the design was developed around the idea of the duality between the stage and backstage. It is this analogy that shaped the inside of this apartment of the Masson Street in Montreal. Mainly functional, backstage contain mechanics for setting up the show. On the other side, the scene takes the appearance of an empty space where objects are meticulously placed. The architectural interpretation of the relationship stage / backstage translates into the notion served / servant spaces developed in the mid 20th century by the architect Louis Khan. The implementation of these concepts gave birth to the black ribbon going through the apartment, wrapping the backstage areas from the entrance to the bathroom, to end at the kitchen. The rest of the space is painted soberly and furbished of different natural textures. Finally, the visual identity of this project is characterized by high contrasts and offers a classic in black and white atmosphere with a chic but crude materiality.

“Design of a pastry shop, storefront” in Montréal, Canada by Atelier Moderno & Anne Sophie Goneau

Tuesday, January 13th, 2015

Article source: Atelier Moderno & Anne Sophie Goneau

The design of the new address of the patisserie À La Folie aims to defy all typecasts of the conventional pastry shop by giving full prominence to the superior presentation and quality of its unique products. The execution of the design begins with the storefront. The shop’s 650 sq.ft. ground floor location on the colorful street of Mont-Royal impelled the creation of a space that is distinguished by its neutrality, acting as a monochromatic backdrop to the vibrancy of both the street and the pastries within. The neutral gray interior elevates the wonderful shapes, textures, and hues of the products on display. This voluntary restraint isolates the senses, and the focus becomes only the pastries themselves; the customer almost begins to taste with their eyes!
