The design is highlighted by the eternal sunshine of the giant sun in the lobby, a surprising feature hidden in the heart of the building.
An hour north of Oslo, located on a majestic hill side facing the Norwegian woods and Mjøsa lake, lies the Gjøvik house; a modern and minimal cluster house created by Norm Architects.
The Gjøvik house, consisting of overlapping cubes of different sizes, makes for an intimate and dynamic family home with materials, levels and inbuilt, tailor-made furniture creating a minimal yet warm and secluded feeling. The house gracefully embraces the hill side terrain, merging with its surroundings in a humble and natural manner. Having thoroughly considered the climate in the process of designing the house, the idea behind the cluster style house was to give the home a cosy and inviting feel, where you can truly hibernate while taking shelter from the frigid days of Nordic winter.
Snøhetta’s design comprises a brand new 1,500 m2 planetarium as well as scattered interstellar cabins, each shaped like a small planet. The new facilities will offer a range of scientific activities within astronomy, sun studies and natural science. Here, researchers, school children, retirees and international tourists can embark on a journey into the world of astronomy and learn more about natural phenomena, such as the Northern lights and the night sky.
The new visitor’s center is situated near the original solar observatory, a twelve-meter research tower built by the University of Oslo for the total solar eclipse of 1954. More than a decade later, in the late 50’s, Solobservatoriet expanded its facilities though a collaboration with the US Air Force with the introduction of a satellite tracking station that monitored Soviet satellites during the Cold War. From 1986, and until it was sold in 2008, Solobservatoriet served exclusively as a scientific research and information hub administrated by the University.

The Vardåsen house was built into a well-developed residential area on Varåden, Grimstad overlooking the city and fjords towards south from the 1.st floor, and with a compact garden and natural forest towards west. Because of the small site, it was essential to stich the house in between existing trees and as close to the road on the west side and towards north as possible. The house is prepared for ground floor wheelchair use, so it was important to cultivate short distance, local qualities, views and natural light for this floor. The organization of the daily living rooms connects to a fluid outdoor space, imposing that the site is much bigger than it really is. The views stretches over a grass field all the way up to the beautiful ridge and deciduous forest some distance away – psychologically making it into a private space.
The apartment buildings on Tjuvholmen has a unique location with a panoramic view to the Oslo Fjord.
The design and planning are conceived in an effort to link each apartment as much as possible to the fjord landscape. The openings in the facades, the balconies and the protrusions have been designed in relation to the trajectory of the sun and the surrounding landscape. This is demonstrated in the way the staggered facades move as a leitmotiv in a regular pulse as each apartment opens to the fjord and the view.
The site is located along the Norwegian Scenic Route Andøya in Northern Norway. Characteristic for the site is the rock formation of “Bukkekjerka” between the road and the sea; a protected Sami cultural monument where nature has carved out an altar and a pulpit. Over the last 50-60 years this has been the venue of an annual open-air church service that attracts people from all over the district. In pre-Christian time this was a sacred site, where Sami people made offerings, to which the sacrificial cave on the seaside bears witness.
The low, elongated shape of the cabin is inspired by traditional mountain farm buildings, but a modern mountain cabin is a place for friends and family to gather. Hence it is planned around several spaces for spending time together, but also with a variety of secluded areas for privacy. The view to the horizon above the surrounding mountains are visible from every room, even from the bathtub. A lounge sofa and a kitchen bench are built into the outer wall of the living room, to maintain an uncluttered space with a gabled ceiling.
Aesop opened its second Norwegian signature store, in the vibrant retail and residential district of Majorstuen, Oslo. Created in collaboration with integrated design and architecture practice Snøhetta, the space is a handsome complement to its Prinsens Gate sibling, conceived by the same firm.
The Two-in-One House is a calm piece of architecture resting on the steep and dynamic landscape of Ekeberglia. Its slender and rectangular form is manifested at the top of the sloping landscape. From a concrete base, the building grows with a wooden clad body forming relation with the omnipresence of broadleaf trees surrounding the building topped with a light glass structure.
The “Slippen” housing complex is located in the district of Lower Malmø, at the exit of Mandalselva in the Mannefjord. The town of Mandal has some very special qualities with its location where the river meets the sea, and a stunningly beautiful timber architecture. Lower Malmø on the eastern side of the river has historically been an industrial area, but this is currently under development and will in future become a vital part of Mandal’s vibrant city life. The project is iconic with its unique roof forms and minimal window details, while at the same time evoking the character of the local surroundings, taking its inspiration from the unique character of Mandal: the encounter between timber construction and the open sea. The architecture is steeped in local vernacular building traditions, but with a new and modern interpretation.
