The commission was straightforward: to design and construct a new commercial building on the outskirts of Nova Gorica, a Slovenian city founded in 1948 near the ‘original’ town of Gorica and close to the Italian border. The Slovenian investment group Istrabenz Gorenje, who among other things invests in new energies, wanted an environmentally friendly building that would also provide space for a kindergarten.
Stamboldžioski Dental Studio is located at the outskirts of the city, in a residential community featuring mostly single-family homes. It has been built as a replacement for the cramped surgery in the dentist’s private house, which was set up on the ground floor. It is therefore an annex, whose floor area – as it so often happens in such cases – exceeds that of the house it has been annexed to. Furthermore, its programme significantly differs from the predominant function of the vicinity.
In line with the Decree on the Location Plan for the site along the railway station in Nova Gorica, Phase 2.a of the construction encompasses the construction of three 11-storey tower blocks, beneath which the construction of an underground garage is foreseen on the entire site of this phase.
The location of the apartment block is in the centre of Nova Gorica (population 32.000) – Nova Gorica is situated in the west of Slovenia, adjacent to the Slovene – Italian border. It lies 92 meters above sea level and has very specific climate conditions – it is renowned as the hottest town in Slovenia during summer and also has very strong winds in winter. With its climate, vegetation and way of living the city has a definite Mediterranean character, where external shaded space has high importance.
