Alpha in Lewisham, Sydney by Tony Owen Partners

Tuesday, May 12th, 2015

Article source: Tony Owen Partners

The Alpha by Tony Owen Partners has recently been completed. Located in Lewisham on the fringe of the Sydney city centre, the Alpha forms the cornerstone of the new McGill master plan prepared by TOP. Alpha’s distinctive design and style which sets it apart from other developments. Its hexagonal pod-like façade creates an environmental screen which controls light and frames the views, allowing maximum exposure as well as privacy. The seven storey building encompasses a selection of one bedroom and two bedroom apartments and retail/commercial spaces. The top levels contain two and three bedroom two storey ‘skyhomes’ with hexagonal metal pods leading onto expansive roof terraces with panoramic views towards the city and surrounding parklands. Sydney is defined by its outdoor living, for apartment dwellers their balconies are the outdoor space, yet until now few people have explored the potential to do something special with these balconies.

Care Implant Dentistry in Sydney, Australia by Pedra Silva Architects

Friday, April 17th, 2015
Article source: Pedra Silva Architects

On one of Sydney’s high-end retail streets we were invited to design a high-level state of the art dental clinic. The actual space and the brief provided by the client posed a few challenges that got us thinking. An aesthetic is something that may be mistaken as an additional almost cosmetic layer to a design, but in our projects, the aesthetic is a clear response to problem solving.
In this particular case the client requested two receptions with two entrances that could function separately but without compromising the sense of spaciousness and its relationship with people passing by. In the same space we also had a stubborn structural column that seemed to impose itself in all the attempts of trying to integrate it into the design. The solution? Answering the brief and magically making the column disappear!

Stirling House in Sydney, Australia by Mac-Interactive Architects

Thursday, December 18th, 2014

Article source: Mac-Interactive Architects

A new-build house replacing two very narrow 2-storey weather-board cottages on the same lot but in a very derelict stateAfter much discussion with Heritage it was felt that it would not be possible to restore them to anything other than museum status as they could not be brought up to current BCA standards. It was also felt that they were not of that much interest and very little original fabric existed. A fairly unique opportunity presented itself to insert a contemporary building into a heritage conservation area – allowing for a future reading of this particular period of Sydney’s development.

Erskineville Studio in Sydney by Pivot Studio

Tuesday, November 25th, 2014

Article source: Pivot Studio

The project is for a secondary dwelling which will be used as an art studio and home office. The project is characterized by its high level external aesthetic detailing. A black glazed brick is chosen as the base building material with a cedar wall paneling system used as a secondary decorative cladding. The timber paneling is both decorative and functional with it being used as rotating timber shutters over the northern level 1 window which reveal splashes of colour and tone in a rotated position. The paneling arrangement acts as a ribbon, wrapping and shrouding the building whilst providing notions of flow and direction through its fluid and curvilinear arrangement and articulation.

Clovelly House in Sydney, Australia by rolf ockert design

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

Article source: rolf ockert design

Having seen some of our earlier work the owners of this extraordinary oceanfront site invited us to submit ideas about what a new house there could look like. They had lived in a simple cottage on the site for several years before and therefore had an intimate familiarity with the advantages and disadvantages of living in this spectacular but exposed spot.

The design process, complex due to several defining key issues inherent to the site, ended up taking us through some radically different sketch options before settling on the one that was finally pursued.

Bates Smart Studio in Sydney, Australia

Sunday, October 26th, 2014

Article source: Bates smart

Architects and interior designers are amongst the biggest supporters of lighting design. They have a clear understanding of how lighting can enhance a space they have created. They also appreciate the consequences of poor lighting.

And so it was when award winning lighting consultancy PointOfView was briefed by architects Bates Smart to light their new Sydney Studio located in a 1940’s built, art deco designed, former offices of the 20th Century Fox Film Corporation.
