IKC de Geluksvogel in Maastricht, The Netherlands by UArchitects

Tuesday, October 17th, 2017

Article source: UArchitects

This a unique sustainable and digital school in the Netherlands.

Two existing schools in two neighbouring locations in Maastricht are merging into a new school on a new location in that city. This particular location was chosen to strengthen the weak social structure of the two neighbourhoods and to introduce a new digital education system to learn also more about the environment, nature and sustainability. Even the playground outside has different zones to help children (re)discover nature and explore their world by means of experiments or to build and test objects.

Omke Jan in Woudsend, The Netherlands by Eek en Dekkers (Piet Hein Eek Architecture)

Friday, October 6th, 2017

Article source: Eek en Dekkers (Piet Hein Eek Architecture)

In June 2014 we were asked to devise a plan for the renovation of a historic farmhouse (1904) in the Friesian town of Woudsend. The client wanted to turn it into a vibrant meeting place, in which the handicrafts and food from the surrounding area play a central role. The milk and meat come from the Friesian cow, the flour from the mill in the village, the wood from the adjacent mill and you can catch your own eel and smoke it in the smokehouse down the road.

Voordorp is a neighbourhood in Utrecht. The area was designed in the 90’s by several architects. Responsible for the supervision was the architect Theo Bos. He won the Rietveld prize for architecture for his urban scheme. Characteristically for the scheme is the small-scaled structure with many corners, gardens, entrances and a lot of new extensions which fit quite well in the architecture of the area.

Upcycling Gemert in The Netherlands by Denkkamer architectuur & onderzoek

Sunday, August 20th, 2017

Article source: Denkkamer architectuur & onderzoek

The initiators developed a process in which spent mushroom compost from mushroom cultivation is upgraded and turned into a valuable soil improver. They do this by biologically drying spent mushroom compost in so-called tunnels. By adding a small amount of concentrated manure, a popular soil improver rich in nitrogen, phosphate and potassium is created. The spent mushroom compost is not only upgraded to a popular soil improver but it is also made lighter in specific weight. As a result, fewer freight transports are needed to deliver the product. A large amount of heat is released naturally during the biological drying process. This heat is used to provide the neighbouring existing mushroom nurseries with heat and consequently natural gas-fuelled boilers are no longer required. The surplus heat is distributed to nearby crop growers.
