Old Sag Harbor Road in Southampton, New York by Blaze Makoid Architecture

Thursday, November 8th, 2018

Article source: Blaze Makoid Architecture

Old Sag Harbor Road is a four bedroom, 7,100 sq ft home in Southampton, NY. The clients are an energetic couple, who were attracted to the pristine surroundings and envisioned the project as a secret enclave in the trees for themselves and their friends. One of the men travels frequently and wanted a place for respite, to recharge and regroup. The other is an interior designer who recently obtained an architecture degree; he served as a key collaborator on the project and took on design challenges as part of the team.

Light Arrival in Crystal Lake, Illinois by FLYNN ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

Thursday, November 8th, 2018

Article source: FLYNN ARCHITECTURE & DESIGN

A luminous ceiling basks a sunroom in waves of light

Having grown tired of Chicago’s humid summers and cold winters limiting their use of an existing screened porch, the clients requested an enclosed sunroom, uplifting and full of light, to be enjoyed year round. The architect, Matt Flynn, wanted a fluid presence to soften the rectangular space. The result: a curvilinear, translucent, backlit, full-room suspended ceiling that bathes the sunroom in relaxing, diffuse light.

NASA – Research Support Building in Cleveland, Ohio by TEN ARQUITECTOS

Thursday, November 8th, 2018

Article source: TEN ARQUITECTOS

Six decades after Congress enshrined its mission in law, NASA marks its diamond anniversary with the groundbreaking of a brand-new centerpiece for its Cleveland-based Glenn Research Center.

The birthplace of a wealth of now commonplace innovations, the facility consists of a constellation of primarily World War II-era brick buildings, which, despite their semi-circular distribution, lacked a central focus.

Thus, tasked with creating much-needed office and collaborative space, TEN Arquitectos recognized a further opportunity. As a firm for whom form does not just follow function — but is, rather, the most perfect and precise expression of it, they opted to create a nexus: a building with amenities and opportunities to engage the entire campus population, serving as both anchor and core.

Article source: Studio B Architecture + Interiors

Located in a walkable, transitional neighborhood near an urban downtown corridor, Space Pod – a nickname given to this structure by the neighbors – acts as a multipurpose space for a young landscape architect. This project was designed to be built in phases and Space Pod is Part I. Part II consists of a Single-Family Residence. The location of each volume on the site was driven by the desire to create a private, sun-filled backyard space, free from large imposing structures.

Museum at Prairiefire in Overland Park, Kansas by Verner Johnson, Inc.

Tuesday, November 6th, 2018

Article source: Verner Johnson, Inc.

What benefits can a museum design bring to the fragmented, undistinguished and often criticized environment of new suburban sprawl?  In addressing this challenge, this project uses architecture to package the latent social potential of the museum typology in a way that redefines the suburb.  By symbolically embodying the story of the region, and emotionally engaging people with its architecture, the Museum is the vehicle to spiritually connect people to where they live, giving the suburban environment a sense of community.

Article source: BIG-BJARKE INGELS GROUP

The new East Austin District is an entirely new sports and entertainment neighborhood tailored to celebrate world-class sports and cultural experiences under one checkered roofscape. Located at the site of Rodeo Austin, the 1.3 million sf East Austin District is a world of worlds for sports fans, music festival-goers and adventurists, capturing the distinct spirit of Austin with the city’s first pro-sports stadium and large-scale music arena. Inspired by local vernaculars including the Jefferson Grid, the individual buildings in East Austin District are arranged as a checkerboard of different functions, appearing as a latticed roofscape from above. Offering more than protection, the rooftop covered in red photovoltaic panels could someday allow the self-sufficient district to share its energy resources community-wide—powering East Austin’s electricity and economy.
