SAOTA’s first completed project in Los Angeles, Stradella, is a remodel of an existing 1970’s house on a beautiful promontory in Bel Air.
The original layout of site and dwelling were well planned to ensure privacy from the street and to address spectacular views over the LA basin, capturing the full panorama from Downtown to Century City, with mountains to the east and ocean to the south.
As an active non-partisan think-tank organization dedicated to health and wellness, the Kansas Health Institute (KHI) plays host to a revolving door of meetings and seminars throughout the week. KHI engaged Hufft to renovate the first floor of their historic building to maximize the efficiency, hospitality and capacity of their conference center. The resulting design provides a collection of meeting spaces that accommodate a variety of group sizes and meeting styles. The rooms include several closed-door cubbies for individual work and quiet contemplation, small meeting rooms for collaborative brainstorming, and a sequence of larger spaces with flexible partitions that can expand to accommodate presentations for up to 170 people.
Cascade Architectural, the international leader in the design, engineering, manufacturing, and installation coordination of coiled wire fabric systems, recently provided a near 4,000 sq. ft. of ¼” 16-gauge stainless steel fabric for the new parking garage on the campus of HCA Healthcare.
For this project, coiled wire fabric is relied on to define the architectural style of the parking garage. It conveys a clean and modern aesthetic – fulfilling the requirements outlined by the project team and the city of Nashville.
The site of the HCA Building 4 parking garage is in an urban overlay zone – requiring the building’s design to abide by a specific set of urban overlay standards. These standards required that the parking garage have an articulated façade to minimize the visual impact of the structure and add life to the street. Collaborative Studio, in need of a product with enhanced design features, called upon Cascade Architectural.
Coachhouse comprises a two-story brick building that was originally constructed as a garage between 1907 and 1911. It was historically associated with the adjacent mansion built in 1905, the rear of which is visible in the context photos. Coachhouse is situated on an alley and a major avenue — Florida Avenue — with a courtyard between the building and the street.
For many rural communities, the school and its activities are the heartbeat of the community. The significance of this relationship is amplified for this high school which is located in the largest geographic school district in Iowa (555 square miles). With the addition of new administrative, recreation, and music spaces, this project strengthens the relationship between the school and its community.
The Trull Residence is on a small corner lot in the suburbs. The lot is long north to south, with driveway access from the north and southern views of a forest and pond. The main view of the house from the street is from the east. The house is divided into two pieces – a solid sleeping volume and an open living pavilion – connected by a glass entry hall. A walled lawn, patio, screened porch, and south-facing deck surround the living pavilion on three sides, forming a network of private outdoor spaces overlooking the forest and pond.
Week’nder opens and closes, its façades shifting from dark and opaque to light and transparent as you walk around it. The design and construction of this weekend getaway were driven by its island site: two prefabricated modules fit on trucks to come over by ferry, posts minimized foundation concrete, and bottle jacks eliminated the need for a crane. Containing the kitchen, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, laundry, and all of the infrastructure, these parallel modules set a datum line above which the gabled roof of a shared, site-built “dry space” rises like a tent.
The Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) El Centro intends to inspire minority students, most of which will become the first in their family’s history to attain higher education. The main objective for this project was to create a building that would become a beacon for the community and inspire students from various ethnic backgrounds. It aspires to break down the emotional and psychological barriers of walking into a college building to provide a sense of belonging, create a sense of place, and make students, faculty, and the community feel welcomed.
Since opening in 1992, the 53-acre Bellevue Botanical Garden has become one of the most popular public gardens in the Pacific Northwest. A growing interest in native plantings and gardening, as well as expanded programs, has drawn large crowds to the botanical gardens in recent years. The design of the new visitor center answers these needs while blurring the boundaries between architecture and the gardens. Balancing civic function with residential scale and attention to detail, the design creates intimate, inspirational spaces that allow for exploration and quiet reflection.

A slightly descending hillside parcel in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles serves as the location for this single family residence. In addition to the site’s gentle topography near the highland of the surrounding hills, the opportunity to capture commanding views of Downtown Los Angeles, the Hollywood sign, and the Griffith Observatory influenced the position and orientation of the home.
