Deep Point Road House in Montross, Virginia by BFDO Architects

Monday, January 8th, 2018

Article source: v2com

A 1950s ranch house failed to make the most of its 17-acre site overlooking two converging creeks. The owners wanted to enlarge the house and take advantage of the sweeping vistas and light reflected off the water. The house was torn down to its foundation, which had to be kept in part due to the building’s proximity to the water. (The Chesapeake Bay Act would have required that a new structure shift significantly away from the shore.)

Article source: Klopf Architecture

Klopf Architecture, Outer Space Landscape Architects, and Coast to Coast Construction updated and expanded a classic Eichler home in the San Mateo Highlands. The young couple with two small children came to Klopf with a strong appreciation of Eichler homes; they are minimalists with a modernist’s eye who, along with their tasteful modernist art objects and furniture, were looking for an updated and upgraded modernist home.

Tehama 1 in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California by Studio Schicketanz

Wednesday, December 27th, 2017

Article source: Studio Schicketanz

Studio Schicketanz organized the design of this house around a central cleared knoll and prioritized outdoor space, producing a deep exploration into the ways in which a structure can merge with and arise from a very specific ecological language. Textured stone walls give rise to controlled cement steps leading to a crisply modernist structure detailed with geometric framing and supporting a cantilevered roof that offers a shaded penumbra around the entirety of the structure. Light is at play everywhere, from the dappled light that hits the stone wall to the reflection of the majestic neighboring tree in the house’s expansive glass facade.

3DS Culinary in Hollywood, California by Oyler Wu Collaborative

Wednesday, December 20th, 2017

Article source: Oyler Wu Collaborative

3DS Culinary is a creative laboratory that is situated at the confluence of technology and the culinary arts.  Dedicated to experimentation and collaboration between designers, chefs, and artists, the new 3DS Culinary space, located on Melrose Avenue in Hollywood, CA, is a direct reflection of the company’s innovative ethos.    Located in a 1928 Neoclassical Bank building, the architects, Oyler Wu Collaborative stripped the interior volume down to its most basic elements, leaving only the concrete vault, masonry exterior walls, and the exposed steel roof trusses that once hung a coffered ceiling.  Inside the open volume, a hyper-modern interior sits in stark contrast to the rawness of the original building.

Lakeway Residence in Texas by Clark | Richardson Architects

Wednesday, December 20th, 2017

Article source: Clark | Richardson Architects

The Lakeway Residence is a contemporary luxury home located in Lakeway, Texas, nestled in the rolling Central Texas Hill Country. This 4 bedroom, 4 bath residence is positioned on a gently sloping site oriented toward distant views that emerge as the treetops descend down the hillside. The double courtyard parti frames outdoor spaces both to the North and South of the residence. To the North, a drive court allows ample space for vehicular access while setting the main entry and massing off as a composition. Passing through the foyer, the high-ceiling living room opens West to a formal dining area and gourmet kitchen on an axis transverse to the courtyard parti. Continuing to the South, 10’ double sliding glass doors open softly to a large pool deck wrapped by the main spaces of the first floor. The long open floor plan, tall ceilings with ample glazing, and the courtyard parti all work in harmony with passive solar principles and prevailing breezes to allow for an efficient green design.

Monday, December 18th, 2017

Article source: Freelandbuck

FreelandBuck has recently completed an 8,000squarefoot office interior for Hungry Man Productions headquarters in Los Angeles. Asked to rethink the organization of the office, the project aims to match the lightheartedness of Hungry Man’s identity with a series of tumbled cubicles that playfully challenge the regularity of the typical office space.

Second Ugliest House on the Mountain in Fayetteville, Arkansas by modus studio

Friday, December 15th, 2017

Article source: modus studio

When investing in your own future, and that of your family, you are investing in a place. If you are an architect, particularly absurd and obsessive questions about where you shall call home become paramount. So, it is a daunting state of affairs when you decide to reside in the second ugliest house on the mountain. It is with great reluctance that my wife (a fellow architect) and I purchased a 90+ year old home in a well-established neighborhood on top of Mount Sequoyah in Fayetteville. Let me stop you right there…if you are thinking classic old historic home with incredible detailing and grandeur just beneath the surface waiting to be revived into its former grandeur…this is not one of those stories.
