The Antwerp based design company OMGEVING, member of the B-DNA partnership[1] and for this competition named ‘OMG-designers and partners’, was awarded the joint first prize in the prestigious international design competition for Han Riverfront Da Nang City. The jury decided to select two laureates out of seven accepted applicants.
The city of Da Nang is located in central Vietnam and consists of five districts. These districts cover a total surface area of 1,250 km² and have a total population of about one million inhabitants. The city of Da Nang, characterized by its two coastlines along the East Sea and the Han River Delta in the city centre, is currently in a state of vast economic expansion and urban development.
ATLAS HOTEL HOIAN is located in Hoi An’s “Old Town; an area which has rapidly grown since it was officially named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Recently, most of the ancient houses have been converted into shops and restaurants that serve the daily influx of tourism. The neighborhood is well known for its beautiful tiled-roofscape and its internal courtyards that provide a layered spatial quality between the inner and outer spaces. This quality has been slowly eroded due to chaotic commercial flow. As a consequence, Old Town has lost its charm of a calm and peaceful lifestyle.

Located within Dong Da district, Hanoi, the newly constructed gallery and lighting showroom uses a perforated terracotta façade to create a simple yet significant impact on the surrounding landscape.
The gallery is located on the top floor overlooking a large neighbouring tree, while the slit skylights expose the roof garden. This offers a space for architects and design professionals to interact.
Just 15 kilometers far from the center of Hanoi, the suburban district Dong Anh has witnessed pervasive urbanization – one of the major causes for a trend towards a maximum use of volume and quantity of construction areas. Lesser importance has been attached to the quality of used space and surrounding scenery. This has resulted in a large number of “suffocating” buildings as often found in newly planned, stuffy urban areas characterized with land plot subdivision for building row houses in Vietnam.
As a part in a chain of Agritecture development projects, Terraces home adopts the combination of Architecture and Agriculture (Agriculture + Architecture = Agritecture) as a basis for sustainable development.
The idea is to combine the two distinctive elements of Vietnam’s rural areas: The house (accommodation space) and terraced rice field (cultivation space) to create a Home with blurred boundaries in and out; above and below; common and private.
This is the individual house project at a small alley in the center of Ho Chi Minh City.
When having a look at Vietnamese towns, we can realize that the buildings’ blocks separated by main streets, and numerous narrow alleys inside of the blocks like blood capillary. The width of these alleys is quite narrow around 2m – 4m, occasionally less than 1m. When walking around these alleys, we can see very vivacious Vietnamese life., these narrow alleys are called “HEM” and these are quite attractive urban spaces in Vietnam.

Optimizing the home owner’s aesthetic personality and bringing more green and most relaxing space are the criteria set out for the architects. Based on a current land-site that is cramped and limited in size (90sqm/floor), the architects have used a variety of solutions from creating floor-through space, omitting unnecessary rooms/space, fully maximizing the beautiful views of the urban township and laying unique green parts (garden stands).
For the Penthouse apartment, a contemporary design style was applied in combination with the use of several selected, classic industrial-style furnitures.

I met the home owner on a rainy afternoon. He introduced me to his house, which, though a bit old but was spacious, had three floors, a front yard and a backyard and was fully functional for the whole family of three generations living together. At first, I thought he only wanted to renovate the house and its living space. But I was wrong, the design task given by the home owner was very simple and concise that I had never heard before: “Let’s give me a blueprint so emotional that I can have enough courage to tear down this house.” It was from this abstract statement that our work started.
In Vietnam, recent years, the house built in advance in new urban areas is popular. Although these urban areas are often located at beautiful position, the project owners do not often adequately investigate the needs and living habits of Vietnamese when building hundreds villas. They are mostly affected by the French architectural style which makes the buyers often reconstruct the space inside house.
The project is the highlight in the ecotourism resort offering charming natural landscape in northern Vietnam. The investor attaches special importance to preservation of environmental landscape, natural ecology of the region and wishes to build a resort which is typical of Vietnamese villages.
Unique architecture of the restaurant is inspired by an image of traditional conical hat closely connected to the beauty of Vietnamese women, simple but no less luxurious.
