AI building on trouble-free construction in 2024.

Reducing human involvement in hazardous activities and increasing efficiency is the goal, but when can we get there?

In case you’re unaware, since 2008, the construction industry has experienced more deaths than any other industry. Construction accounts for 21% of all deaths among U.S. workers.

Here’s the good news. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning will significantly impact safety, and early analytics indicate it will reduce construction accidents by up to 20%. In 2024, Artificial Intelligence for the building industry will exceed $1 billion. Bill Gates said, “AI will be the most transformative innovation any of us will see in our lifetimes, so one must be knowledgeable about the technology, its benefits, and its risks.” Touché.

AI will impact how projects are planned, designed, managed, and executed. AI-driven technologies enhance efficiency, safety, and sustainability. For the architect, it helps from the start — in the earliest part of the conceptual stage.

1. Innovative Design
AI optimizes design. It uses algorithms that explore multiple conceptual options based on inputs such as areas, massings, sun studies, carbon, context, and material implications — increasing creativity with more cost-effective and sustainable buildings.

2. Real-life surroundings
Location. Location. Location. Getting the right construction site is crucial. Al technology enables you to visualize your design at the actual site. Analyze geographical and environmental data in real time to determine the best project location. Maximizes efficiency and minimizes the carbon footprint.

3. Environmentally friendly
By analyzing data on energy consumption, emissions, and carbon calculations, AI identifies ways to reduce environmental impacts and improve sustainability performance. This information enables informed decisions on how to reduce the ecological footprint created by ongoing construction.

4. Built-in safety
One of the major impacts AI has on the construction industry is improving safety. AI-powered sensors and cameras can monitor worksites in real-time and identify potential hazards, such as a lack of proper safety equipment, incorrect usage, or non-functioning equipment. It also analyzes data from past projects to identify patterns and predict potential safety issues. This technology eliminates future hazards and improves worker well-being.

5. Inspired collaboration
AI-powered collaboration tools help improve communication between all team members working on different aspects of a project. Real-time data sharing and analysis enables colleagues to model, display, and visualize early concepts for greater collaboration, comprehension, and results. Make better decisions and work more efficiently as a collective group.

6. Take control
As AI-powered sensors and cameras can inspect and monitor construction sites in real-time for defects or deviations from design specifications — you can ensure that the work is being done to the highest possible standards. No mistakes. No mishaps. No need for expensive rework.

AI is one of the most significant technological advancements of the 21st century, impacting
several industries such as healthcare, finance, and transportation. The one industry that has
been slower to adopt AI is construction. Our industry is traditional. It relies on disparate systems.
Cumbersome paper-based processes. Together with AI, we can build something no one could
construct alone — a sustainable future.
