SOCIAL HOUSING AND KINDERGARTEN IN PARIS, France by GAETAN LE PENHUEL ARCHITECTES

Article source: GAETAN LE PENHUEL ARCHITECTES

Urban resources

Paris’s 11th arrondissement combines the city’s highest population density with one of its lowest green space totals. Set back from Boulevard Richard Lenoir, this large plot has been pre-emptively acquired by the City of Paris with a view to creating, along Impasse Truillot, a new public garden edged with social housing units and a crèche for 60 infants. The ultimate aim is a major green strip running from the forecourt of the church of Saint Ambroise to Boulevard Richard Lenoir. Whatever comes of this handsome urban project, currently awaiting the acquisition and demolition of business premises, the building fit with the size of the planned park.

DENSE CITY in Paris, France by Fresh Architectures

Thursday, May 21st, 2015

Article source: Fresh Architectures

Our project has been designed as a unique object, both imposing and securing in comparison with the scale of the neighboring buildings. Its geometry makes it both streamlined and easy to locate. The same material has been chosen to cover the roof and the façades, which gives the building a monolithic and distinctive look. It has been treated in order to be a part of the existing urban environment. As an example, the tiles generate an interesting surface finish by producing both a mineral and monolithic effect. In addition, the glazed surface finish diminishes the deposits from the air pollution. The façades are designed to clean themselves naturally with the rain.

Esfera City Center in Monterrey, Mexico by Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA)

Tuesday, May 19th, 2015

Article source:  Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA)

Concept
From a client brief that originally called for 12 homogenous residential towers, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has proposed an alternative community-orientated design comprised of a low-rise, yet high-density residential building of 981 apartments with accommodation around three sides of the rectangular site. Each side of the building has been shaped to optimize its environmental orientation, creating a sequence of interconnected internal and external courtyards, gardens and public spaces for both residents and neighbours.

Micro-apartment in Berlin, Germany by spamroom + johnpaulcoss

Tuesday, May 19th, 2015

Article source: spamroom + johnpaulcoss

The design brief for this Berlin flat renovation, in the district of Moabit, not only included the challenge of sensitively updating an Altbau (early 1900’s), but included the added element of its charming small size – measuring just 21sqm.

Like many buildings of its era, the original layout of the flat had been two very small but separate rooms, presumably one of them being a kitchen, with a shared toilet located in an outbuilding downstairs. In an effort to modernise the flat a previous owner had substituted the former kitchen with a more convenient private bathroom. This had the added effect of unbalancing the overall proportions of living/sleeping/cooking/washing space in the flat.

2 GILRS BUILDING by Kavellaris Urban Design

Tuesday, May 19th, 2015

Article source: Kavellaris Urban Design

The 2 Girls Building is a mixed use building that fuses art, photography and architecture. The project explores the relationship between the three disciplines and blurs their respective boundaries resulting in one craft overlapping and appropriating with the characteristics of the others in the form of a new medium. As a result photography appropriates architectural materiality and photography shifts into the architectural space of the third dimension. Architecture becomes photography, photography becomes architecture and the building becomes a hybrid urban artefact within the built environment.

Alpha in Lewisham, Sydney by Tony Owen Partners

Tuesday, May 12th, 2015

Article source: Tony Owen Partners

The Alpha by Tony Owen Partners has recently been completed. Located in Lewisham on the fringe of the Sydney city centre, the Alpha forms the cornerstone of the new McGill master plan prepared by TOP. Alpha’s distinctive design and style which sets it apart from other developments. Its hexagonal pod-like façade creates an environmental screen which controls light and frames the views, allowing maximum exposure as well as privacy. The seven storey building encompasses a selection of one bedroom and two bedroom apartments and retail/commercial spaces. The top levels contain two and three bedroom two storey ‘skyhomes’ with hexagonal metal pods leading onto expansive roof terraces with panoramic views towards the city and surrounding parklands. Sydney is defined by its outdoor living, for apartment dwellers their balconies are the outdoor space, yet until now few people have explored the potential to do something special with these balconies.

50 Housing units in Limeil-Brevannes, France by BRUTHER

Thursday, May 7th, 2015

Article source: BRUTHER

The problem in the understanding of in-habitation is that it is perceived as purely utilitarian. Perceiving it as such, is to deny it of all the structural aspects it has on one’s perception and thus on one’s way of thinking. In redefining the habitat and in admitting its competitive part, one realizes that it is closely related to aesthetics. In that sense, inhabiting would contain an essential aesthetic approach. However, the question is how one can think habitation beyond its purely functional use, and instead seeing it as contemplative and thus as aesthetic? Wouldn’t it be denying its primary function of shelter and protection? In what way could inhabiting and dwelling, as a retreat from the world, be a space for reflection and contemplation of the exterior, and even be understood as privileged space?
