More low-cost CAD options

Last week I wrote about Low Cost CAD Options for AEC professionals. This week we add to this list with the following products:

Bricsys BricsCAD

BricsCAD is a company that does not put out press materials, but instead offers BricsCAD release notes. These are for those hardy engineers who want to tools at a low price to really build their own open platform CAD solution. Bricsys provides a DWG engineering design software “BricsCAD,” which is said by the company to be an “industrial strength CAD software platform with industry leading support for the AEC, GIS, civil engineering, process and power, and mechanical CAD markets.” The company is a founding member of the Open Design Alliance, founded in 2002.

Autodesk’s first quarter results look strong

Autodesk reported financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2015 on Thursday, May 15.

From the press release, here are the following primary results:

First Quarter Fiscal 2015
• Total billings increased 10 percent, compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2014.
• Total subscriptions increased by over 89,000, compared to the fourth quarter of fiscal 2014.
• Revenue was $593 million, an increase of 4 percent, compared to the first quarter of fiscal 2014 as
reported, and increased 5 percent on a constant currency basis. Revenue contribution from the recent
acquisition of Delcam was immaterial to first quarter results.
• GAAP operating margin was 7 percent, compared to 14 percent in the first quarter of fiscal 2014.
• Non-GAAP operating margin was 17 percent, compared with 24 percent in the first quarter of fiscal
2014. A reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP results is provided in the accompanying tables.
• GAAP diluted earnings per share were $0.12, compared to $0.24 in the first quarter of fiscal 2014.
• Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share were $0.32, compared to $0.42 in the first quarter of fiscal 2014.
• Deferred revenue increased 13 percent to a record $964 million, compared to the first quarter of fiscal
2014.
• Cash flow from operating activities was $219 million, compared to $224 million in the first quarter of
fiscal 2014.

Low cost CAD options

For many years now, low-cost CAD options have taken up the slack for an industry of potential users just getting into CAD, and those who may not need a full-fledged higher priced CAD program such as AutoCAD or Bentley MicroStation. All of these CAD options have mobile capabilities for tablet or smartphone users, either on both Android and iOS or on one of them.

HP DL380z Virtual Workstation announced

Jeff Groudan, worldwide director, Thin Client and Virtual Workstation Product Management and Jim Christensen, product manager at HP, talked about the announcement this week of the HP DL380z Virtual Workstation solution –  a slick combination of HP’s server hardware technology and the integration of it into the true workstation ecosystem, delivered out of the Workstation Business unit.

Bentley Systems 2013 annual revenue results

On April 16, Bentley Systems announced its 2013 annual results in a press call. Bentley is a private company and uses the opportunity to highlight its annual accomplishments such as its involvement in trends and new products. Bentley is a leader in the market in the areas of electric power generation, electric power transmission, distribution and communications; water and wastewater distribution, EPC and AEC, and mining and metals.

Bentley ProjectWise Construction Work Package Server available

In a virtual press conference recently, Harry Vitelli, Bentley vice president, construction and field and Mark Hattersley, Bentley product manager spoke about the immediate availability of ProjectWise Construction Work Package Server.

“This product is the only commercially available off-the-shelf offering that allows constructors to implement the emerging best practice of work packaging,” said Vitelli. “This new paradigm in construction is being advocated by leading industry organizations, including the Construction Industry Institute, following research showing that such methodologies can increase safety and lower total install cost.”

Of the $420 million labor hours that should be done efficiently, only $155 million of that is work getting done.

Sefaira’s performance based design platform now includes daylighting analysis

Sefaira today announced that its performance based design platform includes daylighting analysis in their Sefaira for SketchUp product. With the addition of daylighting, Sefaira combines two critical design metrics in the same tool.

Reality capture for building innovation

Josh Lowe, senior innovation advisor and Mike Whaley, president of TURIS Systems,spoke at Autodesk University during the session entitled, “BuildX: Construction Site of the Future.” Lowe and Whaley talked about the scanning revolution, or “reality capture” as it is now called.  TURIS  develops and implements project-specific Building Innovation Systems that utilize a technology-based modular approach for knowledge management. Laser scanning or reality capture has become more accessible, portable and more applicable.

Autodesk University 2013 Report

Robots for the future jobsite, flying drones for delivering packages and reality capture were all part of the show at Tuesday morning’s Mainstage presentation at Autodesk University 2013. The event kicked off with a short little skit by Penn & Teller, who will apparently provide an entire show for AU attendees on Thursday.
