Hertl Architekten were authorized for the renovation of some buildings on the campus for vocational school in Linz. The residential school as well as the sports hall were rebuild first. Hence the renovation of the façade and the classrooms of the existing school for plumbers followed.
The design of the façade, a covering of fickle coloured, irregular varying strips was transferred to achieve a holistic appearance, but a little varied. The height of the strips does not conform to the required dimension of the classrooms’ illumination. For that reason a second facing was built. The openings of the exterior wall are not related to the facings’ strips. Instead of the glossy materials of the other buildings, grey glass was used for this facade. The glasses permit views from indoor and shade the big retral windows at the same time. Ventilation appliances powered by heat recovery are located separately in the classrooms. In addition to gasper supply, they are used as technical prototypes for the pupils. Acoustic boards for wall and ceiling improve the atmosphere of the classrooms. A perforated slab above the main staircase forms the new roof and acts as overheat control of the building. The entrance area was changed because of spacial advertisements. One legible, welcoming entrance is located in an internal corner of two buildings. The change from the low-ceilinged and protected area to a high hall illuminated by skylight invites to a sensual experience. Contact Hertl Architects
