Digital Origami by LAVA

March 27th, 2011 by Sanjay Gangal

The danger of digital creations is the virtual worlds they depend on, or rather the lack of constraints in the virtual if compared to the physical world. Most of the time digital creations end in just being crazy flythrough computer renderings. With the Digital origami we wanted to realize concepts. We as studied and research current trends in parametric modeling, digital fabrication and material-science and applied this knowledge to create a space-filling installation. The aim was to test the fitness of a particular module, copied from nature, to generate architectural space, with the assumption that the intelligence of the smallest unit dictates the intelligence of the overall system.

Digital Origami uses 3500 recycled and recyclable cardboard molecules in two different shapes. Our studio explored the intelligence of natural and architectural systems through the smallest elements of design. Ecosystems such as reefs act as a metaphor for an architecture where the individual components interact in symbiosis to create an environment.

In urban terms, the smallest homes, the spaces they create, the energy they use, the heat and moisture they absorb, multiply into a bigger organisational system, whose sustainability depends on their intelligence. By itself this recognition is an ESD principle that in this instant simplifies the message and visualises it by creating highly dimensional and sculptural appearance that plays with space by climbing up walls and arching over to create low, cave-like tunnels.

The seed for the projects is in essence an educative and thought provoking experiment, that aims to educate the valuable concept of intelligent, system based designs.

Using limited local sponsoring the collaborating students could archive a two week long exhibition that incorporated Computer controlled luminaries with sophisticated Light Systems and acoustic installations by local designer that brought the whole installation to life.

Emerging Practice
Our Studio was formed in 2007 following the union of two Design Principals who have had significant design roles in high profile local and international design projects.

Through design and practice we want to:

• Reposition Interior architecture at the forefront of cultural, technological and social innovation.

• Engage with the architectural debate, through teaching, lecturing, research and publishing.

• Correct the perception of interior design as the pure production of square meters.

• Refocus on the architectural unity of space, structure and ornament as a single experience.

• Create the cathedrals of the new millennium

• We design by research, we want to push the boundaries of the conceptions of space and time, we create artificial environments, an enhanced reality, a new intensity.

• The practice works as a network, implementing the most creative brains of the world into a unique think tank.

• Inspiration: man nature technology
