Flip Flop House in Los Angeles by Dan Brunn Architecture

In designing a private residence, our primary concern is to answer the specific needs of the client while rethinking the local domestic typology. Thus, we started the project by mapping the neighboring houses, and also by carefully delving into the client’s daily life and routines.

Back Corner

The client for the Flip-Flop house is a senior couple that lives and works together. Sharing a common passion for photography, they own an impressive collection of digital art pieces.A design dilemma arose as to how we can showcase parts of their collection while still capitalizing on the amazing views from the corner beach front site.

Also, the husband, an immigrant from Belgium, suffers from acute polio aftereffects and needs an elevator to move throughout the three floors, a height that the small site requires.

All houses in Venice beach are of course designed to maximize views towards the sea and in general, they have little interaction with the active pedestrian networks of the neighborhood. In the Flip Flop house we wanted to use the couple’s art pieces as a medium to communicate with the surrounding community, which comprises a large number of artists.

Thus, we selected elements that are usually limited to their mechanical functions and we turned them into display apparatus: the elevator shaft, shutters, and blinds. The moveable nature of some of those elements allows the façade to mutate, either disclosing or hiding art. We will commission a local artist to paint on to the spinning wall, in order to create an ever-changing trompe d’oeil.
