South East Elevation

Design Considerations –Environmental

The building is designed for passive solar heating and cooling with no supplementary mechanical systems.

The structure is oriented on an east west axis for optimum Southern exposure with the critical ratio of 1 square foot of solar glazing to 7 square foot of thermal mass.

Plan - An inspiration for the arbor enclosure is the seine fishing net design

Insulation and air filtration barriers exceed Mass standards.

The ratio of 3 square foot to 1 square foot of operable windows oriented towards prevailing (southwesterly) breeze induces air movement.

Deep overhangs and sun shading devices on Southern and Western facades assist in summer cooling.

The home is Energy Star compliant.

Sections & Elevations

Design Considerations – Programatic

The house consist of three distinct rooms: one for sleeping, one for cleansing, one for living.

The eight hundred square foot interior space is expanded by an eight hundred square foot exterior court yard.

North Elevation

The courtyard is defined by walls of grapes (this is Martha’s Vineyard after all). Four apricot trees in the courtyard will provide summer fruit and shade.

The courtyard columns extend into interior space and define kitchen and wood burning stove areas.

Furnishings are custom designed. The bed creates a room with in a room, the table tressel is modeled on an eel.

Design inspirations include seine nets and wooden boats.
