Hybrid House in Joshua Tree, California by Ecotech Design

The stairway is curved and sheathed in recycled, corrugated metal with a vertical slit window facing east to distribute morning light evenly across the walls of the 18’ high stairwell that also doubles as a display gallery for the photography studio.

Five ISO shipping containers are stacked between two levels with the living space below and the bedroom suite above. Large areas of the steel walls were removed in order to open the interior spaces to sweeping desert views, natural daylight and ventilation.

Front View

A proprietary and innovative steel framing system reinforces and ties the container modules together to resist earthquake and wind forces. It allows large openings to be made in the container walls and forms a framework between the residence and studio.

Interior View

A solar shade canopy wraps the roof and south and west sides of the residence and solar breezeway to provide protection against desert heat, glare, wind and blowing dust.

Solar Daylighting

The shaded, solar breezeway provides a protected and naturally cooled outdoor room as an extension of the interior, which connects the house to the studio.

A 160 sf green roof made up of 4’x4’ drought-tolerant, native plant modules is placed on the second floor shade framing, and forms a visual extension of the living desert across the white “cool roof.”

The photo studio is constructed from a pre-engineered steel Butler building system and features dimmable, solar daylighting to adjust light levels throughout the day.

An ISO shipping container is used to store photographic equipment and supplies. It’s plugged-in to the studio to allow for easy storage expansion or removal. All containers used in this project were manufactured in China.
