Santa Teresa Retirement Home in SEGRIÀ, Spain by B MÉS R 29 ARQUITECTES SLPApril 28th, 2011 by Sumit Singhal
Reform and Expansion of an existing retirement home, located in one corner of an equipment zone between the streets Pica d’Estats, Bisbe Irurita, Magí i Morera and Antonio Bergós Masso. The building is extended in their lateral contact, with ground floor and first floor, more an architectural sealing element that complements the communications center and access.
The existing building is an isolated volume of ground floor and three floors, step to the westward with continuous facade in street Pica d’Estats. This volume was built as an element marking the northeast corner of the equipment zone, but it did not come in contact with adjacent equipment to street Pica d’Estats. The functional needs of the program required an extension of the new equipment that almost doubled the existing area and needed to understand new construction as one equipment with a continued flow of users that does not distinguish the new volume of expansion of the program’s initial retirement home. The complex volumetry and functional needs, made it a very complicated intervention, we had three problems to solve with a single gesture. The initial building, due to its complex volumetry in a small size was difficult to raise an expansion that didn’t add a new aesthetic and material criterion. The need of floor built area not allowed to stay away from adjacent equipment without leaving residual spaces between them. And the complexity of arise an expansion that would integrate the existing building in a single project that would give continuity to the whole program and allowed to understand the new building as an integrated part of de new equipment, due to their small size we wont add more volumetric complexity because we had to ensure the correct function of the resulting retirement house. Analyzing all these parameters, we propose a project where the base volume of expansion keeps of aesthetic criteria of the existing construction giving continuity to a building that its especial shape wont accept more adding volumetric variations without being artificial. Also, the building need an element that makes it the project was endes as one, as if it had planned this way from the beginning. Thus, arises a protective outer solar system in the form of vertical louver of aluminum that solved the old problem of intrusion of the original building and endowed the whole of a current image that allowed read a single volume that responds the functional needs, aesthetic and according to the environment. These protections also define a very special light in interiors that are made of white paraments, some of them practicables, and continuous neutral floors that unify the image inside the home and give prominence to the different inputs filtered light from the outside.
