Article source: Holabird & Root The Plano Classroom Building is a stand-alone satellite campus that contains classrooms, laboratories, student study areas, and support space within two stories. The design team was challenged to create the experience of a traditional multi-building campus within a singular building– a facility that would have its own identity while extending the mission and vision of the College to the surrounding community.
The building is strategically sited to take advantage of views of Lake Plano and access to the surrounding sustainable landscape, which includes bioswales and the porous paving parking needed for the commuter campus. The main corridor is designed as an indoor quadrangle, an “in between” space where students can assemble. The lantern-like lobby is placed at the hinge between the administration wing and classroom areas and serves as an indoor/outdoor terrace for students, creating a visual connection between the internal program and its surrounding landscape. At night, this glass lobby becomes a beacon to those passing along the main thoroughfare, creating a visual presence for the College. Contact Holabird & Root and Holabird & Root
