Sumit Singhal
Sumit Singhal loves modern architecture. He comes from a family of builders who have built more than 20 projects in the last ten years near Delhi in India. Article source: Cino Zucchi Architetti with RecchiEngineering and Proger The current museum complex, designed by Amedeo Albertini in 1958-60, is comprised of various bodies, the main section of which, a convex 114 meter façade faces onto the Po river and Corso Unità d’Italia. The competition brief stipulated the addition of a new wing on Via Richelmy and the reorganization of pedestrian and vehicular access, keeping in line with the latest developments of museums in Europe. The new museum, with an expected annual attendance of 250,000 people, accompanied by significant conference and educational activities, will thus become a driving force in the urban renewal of the southeast quadrant of the city. The entrance to Turin from the south is characterized by the exceptional quality of the landscape and environment of the green parkway that runs along the banks of the river Po, punctuated by the presence of the impressive structures of the Palazzo del Lavoro by Pierluigi Nervi and the renovated Palavela. The project articulates the relationship between the ‘drive-by’ perception from Corso Unità d’Italia and the establishment of a more intimate pedestrian environment grafting its way on via Richelmy.  Night View The existing building’s symmetry is “redefined” by its new base, in order to respond to its surroundings and emphasize its relationship with Largo Unità d’Italia. Underlining the existing horizontal lines on the river front, the new ground floor has a number of relational spaces that accommodate the different areas of the public museum and related activities (bookshop, gift-shop, bar-cafeteria). In line with many contemporary European examples the exhibition functions are integrated with a series of complementary activities that bring life to the car museum at all hours of the day and night.  Night View The existing courtyard becomes a new event space thanks to the addition of a glass roof which illuminates the space. By making the existing courtyard an internal space, onto which the museum routes face, the visitors are provided with a very natural means of orientation. This provides not only a bridge linking the two bodies but a core at the heart of the project, taking the form of a ‘Ring’, a proven exhibition scheme. The new wing on the west side, a large undivided space which provides very flexible exhibition space, integrates the existing body embracing the side of the building and giving continuity to the two “urban” elevations.  Aerial View in Night The new facade of glass treated with varying degrees of transparency unifies the front on Via Richelmy, renewing the image of the museum with a great deal of attention to the relationship between the existing and new sections, connected by a design approach that can enhance and bring unity to the complex . The auditorium and educational spaces on Via Zuretti can easily work both independently and in conjunction with the museum and the restaurant, animating this museum complex which hosts one of the most unique collections of cars in Europe.  Interior View Cino Zucchi Architetti The Cino Zucchi Architetti studio is constantly searching new spatial solutions for contemporary life in the delicate and rapidly changing context of the European landscape. Its goal is to combine innovation and research with professional completeness capable of responding to complex programs on any scale and employing, when needed, a well-established net of specialized consultants.  Exterior View The studio has designed and realized many commercial, public, industrial and residential buildings, public spaces, renewal plans and master plans for agricultural, industrial and historical areas. It has participated in numerous national and international competitions and is active in the field of interior and exhibition design. The works of the studio have received widespread critical acclaim and have been published in magazines both in Italy and abroad, and have been the subject of numerous exhibitions.  Interior View Cino Zucchi Cino Zucchi was born in Milano in 1955; he graduated at M.I.T. in 1978 and at the Politecnico di Milano in 1979, where he is currently Chair Professor of Architectural and Urban Design. He has taught architecture at many international seminars and has been visiting professor at Syracuse University and at ETH in Zürich. He is the author of the books L’architettura dei cortili milanesi 1535-1706, Asnago e Vender. Architetture e progetti 1925-1970, and is editor of the book Bau-Kunst-Bau. He participated in the organization and exposition design of the XV, XVI, XVIII and XIX Triennale, and his work has been shown at the 6th, 8th and 12th Venice Biennale.  Interior View The urban renewal of the former Junghans factory site in Venice was awarded a mention in the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture – Mies van der Rohe Award 2001 and in the Medaglia d’oro all’architettura Italiana 1995-2003 e 2004-2006, the Weinerberger Brick Award 2004 and won the Piranesi Award 2001, the “Comune di Venezia” Architecture Award 2005 and the Ecola Award 2008 for the category “Black Bread Architecture”. The Portello project (former Alfa Romeo factory, Milan) of residential and office building was awarded a special mention at the Medaglia d’oro dell’Architettura Italiana 2009 and won the International Architecture in stone Award 2009. Recent works include a large master plan for the Keski Pasila area in Helsinki, the Salewa Headquarters in Bozen, residential buildings in the ex market area in Bologna and the new Lavazza executive Headquarters in Turin.
