Residential accommodation and associated spaces for 600 students improves facilities at the Newton Park Campus. Bath Spa University has appointed Hopkins Architects to consolidate its student housing at the historically important Newton Park Campus, 4 miles from Bath. The scheme will involve the construction of residential accommodation for 600 students and the associated common spaces.

This BREEAM ‘Excellent’ project, which has an energy centre at its core, will significantly promote Bath Spa’s EcoCampus credentials. Located at the southern end of the site, the student accommodation is the second phase of a strategy to improve facilities across the campus. At the centre of the historic Newton Park estate is a Grade I listed Georgian house designed by Stiff Leadbetter, set in a Capability Brown landscape. Pevsner described it as “one of the finest country mansions of the 18th century in Somerset”. The site is set in a registered park and gardens, with several further listed buildings, including two Grade I and two nearby Scheduled Ancient Monuments.

The main components of the buildings will accommodate student bedrooms and the associated common parts together with a laundry and energy centre. In the context of such an auspicious setting, the landscape proposals and integration with the historic park will be very important, balancing the existing ecology of the site, with the requirements for campus car-parking at the southern end of Newton Park.

The opportunity to provide a proper setting, responding to the scale of the existing buildings and relationship to the landscape context will be most welcome in this context.
