Article source: Kenneth E. Hobgood Architects The house is located in Meyers Park, one of the oldest in town neighborhoods in Charlotte, North Carolina. The original house, garage and gardens were built in 1914. The renovation of the existing house was to restore it as much as possible to its original condition, maintaining the traditional organization of center stair hall flanked by the Living Room and the Dining Room.
The new stair was designed as a large cubic volume constructed of plain sawn maple containing a steel and slate stair. The addition contains the kitchen, breakfast room and linear garden room protecting the spaces on the street side and opening up to the garden to the south. The gardens reflect the original formal gardens south of the garden pavilion. The addition terminates with a breakfast room open on three sides. To provide privacy and sun control, a 10-foot x 10-foot mechanical system moves vertically on metal tracks, allowing changes in light and enclosure. The garage was converted to a one-car garage and guest/game room.
