Article source: SOY source Architects Our client who lives in Tokyo plans to have a new mountain side villa where he can live after his retirement. Thinking about not only a summer house but an actual living space, we have to design a space as functional family house as well as nature friendly luxurious mountain villa.
The project site is located on a foot of Mt Hachimantai, well-known shield volcano with its abundant hot spring in north east part of Japan. When we visited the site at the first time, we actually amazed at deep forest around the site. The first thing came to our mind was the scene of a villa standing with this beautiful wild nature. The design theme of the villa is simply creating a space where you can feel or absorb the nature. First of all, we carefully placed the building in the site without cutting any large size tree. And then, we introduced three different types of terrace space with roof on them. Each of them has its own function depending on the room next to it. Bath terrace gives a nice and cozy exterior space to a bath room which has a large size hot spring bath tab. BBQ terrace gives wooden deck exterior space to a living and dining room for enjoying outside activities. Because of mountain district with its tough weather condition, these terraces can be enclosed by wooden sliding doors or mosquito nets depending on a season.
In summer, the villa provides a cool and quiet space with green forest. In winter, the villa provides a warm and comfortable shelter with natural hot spring.
