Half-semi-detached house in Poznań, Poland by KILKORO architekci (designed using Archicad and SketchUp)

The brief was to simply refurbish and recondition an existing house to reach contemporary living standards and a modern appearance. The owners have a small business of their own which requires an office with a separate entrance for future clients. The house is a typical 1970′ polish neighborhood semi-detached house. The only difference was that the other part of the house was never built.

Concept/Solution

Respecting the existing functional layout of the house, the living spaces where distributed on 5 levels. Technical and utility rooms where kept in the basement. The ground floor apart from the garage is also the place for the owners office with an easy public entrance. To reach the first floor living spaces a new semi-external staircase was built. The kitchen and living room was merged into one creating a bright, open space. On corresponding landings the bedrooms, guestroom and bathroom are located. The small, dark bathroom by extension was converted into a bright and spacious room with an exceptional bathtub lowered to floor level.

The buildings proportions and lack of unnecessary details create a very modern and elegant form.  Two contrasting materials in texture and color were used: white external render and wood-colored hpl boards.  A finishing touch was added with the use of perforated metal sheets (coated with the same color as hpl boards) on the front wall to provide natural light in the staircase. While during nighttime the light seeps through to the garden, blurring the distinction between outside and inside.
