Article source: Zaha Hadid Architects Our new museum and cultural centre emerges in contrast to a surrounding vertical skyline – seemingly defying gravity as it ‘floats’ above the ground, its long, curvilinear lines generating a building of enormous fluidity, velocity and lightness within which visitors may ‘experiment’ with the very notion of ‘gallery’.
Vilnius, European Capital of Culture for 2009, welcomes a new Zaha Hadid Architects creation – a museum and cultural centre in which visitors may experiment with notions of gallery, spatial complexity and movement. The new building’s sculptural volume incorporates our characteristic conceptual elements, achieving great fluidity, velocity and lightness. Seeming to defy gravity it ‘floats’ above ground level, its curvilinear lines echoed through greatly elongated contours – a stark contrast to the vertical skyline presented by the Vilnius business district. Originally completed as a feasibility study for the Solomon R Guggenheim Foundation and State Hermitage Museum, our design points towards a future architectural language, following a research trajectory which embraces the latest digital design technology and fabricated construction methods.
