Article source: Mamen Domingo and Ernest Ferré, architects The word “polilleuger” arises from a proposal to conduct a sports facility with the idea of sustainability and low maintenance. We must rethink the architecture, like so many other things in society. This was the idea of this equipment. Leveraging the existing soil. Give more use to the sports that schools use very few hours a day.
Sustainability. Despite a constructing a building, the existing electrical consumption in the outdoor arena is maintained, changing it by a fluorescence system consumes the same (in the next “polilleuger” is planned to introduce LED technology). Minimize energy-consuming facilities, simply by not installing heating or air conditioning, but using passive systems for space conditioning: cross ventilation, wind protection, use of natural light, thermal insulation … Social project. After the intervention, the use of space sports has been quadrupled. In addition to increasing the quality for the educational community it has become a sports facility in the neighborhood, an area of significant social integration. It can be used all year round, even when school is closed.
Architectural austerity. The lightness in this case is linked to material savings. Both structure and cover weigh half that of conventional equipment and do not support any facilities except the lighting installation, allowing to speak of a half iron in the structure than usual. A bracing structural system also makes it safe for the wind efforts the same heavier structure, hence the distinctive inclined bars. Functional program. The “polilleuger” has, in addition to the track, a slipway and two sporting goods stores. If the school does not have changing rooms, as in this case, new ones are built. Public services are enabled for the people of the neighborhood or the public. It also improved the environment of the centre. In the case of Ciutat de Reus CEIP the outdoor patio of the school, the access area, perimeter fence, the children’s playground are urbanized, some pitch outdoor courts are built and an existing outdoor track is repaired. Structure and materials. It is arised a metallic tubular structure, with frames every 4.35 m, at a height of 7.50 m and cross-light saving 27.50 m. The structure is painted white and left eye. Above this, the secondary structure supports cover sheets, consisting of a polycarbonate plate zebra and sandwich panel. The basis of “polilleuger” and the closing of the costumes are made with precast concrete panels. Doors and signage are the same color of the track. The top of the facade is a translucent cellular polycarbonate coating that allows light to enter a comfortably inside and gives a distinctive colour in each building to make it unique in the city. The result is an equipment that achieves high spatial and formal quality and contemporary look with a surprisingly low running cost.
