The New York Public Library by 1100 Architect

This 10,500-square-foot library, which occupies the bottom two floors of a residential highrise development in Battery Park City, was commissioned to meet the needs of a new and rapidly growing community. As a new branch without an ingrained pattern of community use, it was critical for the design to establish a presence that would attract visitors. Open, bright spaces create a welcoming environment for the public, while the design of book and periodical displays, information desks, and furniture facilitates the most efficient circulation. The folded planes of the ceiling guide the visitor’s eye through the library and acts as a physical and visual unifier for the entire space. The most eco-friendly of the New York Public Library branches, the project utilizes numerous sustainable design strategies and is on track to receive LEED Gold certification.

1100 Architect

1100 Architect is the New York and Frankfurt based architectural firm of David Piscuskas, FAIA, LEED AP and Juergen Riehm, FAIA, BDA. Our work spans a vast array of typologies including educational and arts institutions, libraries, offices, single and multi-family residences, retail spaces, and community facilities.

Since 1983, our mission has been to create functional architecture of lasting beauty that communicates meaning while cultivating relationships. We believe that design can motivate and inspire users, and make an affirmative, lasting impact on individuals and communities alike. The studio avoids dogmatic strictures, instead favoring a careful consideration of light, material, and detail that is specific to the nature of each project. The end products are functional, beautiful, innovative, and sustainable spaces that elegantly integrate with their surroundings.

We believe that it is essential to incorporate sustainable and high performance objectives in the pursuit of lasting beauty and quality. Based on our experience designing projects both within and outside of the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED requirements, our view is that good design and environmental sustainability are interconnected elements of a thoughtful, responsible project.

1100 Architect operates a branch design office in Frankfurt, Germany. This is the main office for projects in Europe, giving us a breadth of exposure to new ideas and technologies outside of the domestic market.
