Article source: EcoHouse Construction What began as a development for Enron Corp executives, a townhouse project was redesigned and re-imaged even before completion into a boutique modern hotel. It was named one of 16 hippest hotels by Dwell Magazine soon after it opened its doors.
The Modern consists of 12,000 sq ft, three penthouse suites, and 11 bedrooms and generous event spaces, all on an urban lot in downtown Houston, Texas near major museums and universities. The giant perforated aluminum screen sunshades the western facade and creates a lantern effect at night for the hotel lobbies as well as provide thermal chimney cooling. The section of the structure and roof folds over itself to deal with the hot humid Texas sun. Dormers bend down to reflect the hot western sun into bathrooms rather than heat them. Cedar rain-screen siding contracts the metal skins and contribute to passive cooling. Exposed structure and pine wood flooring contribute to the sustainable approach and warms the interior.
