Article source: BBVH Architects Dutch architects of BBVH were looking for a solution to give future buyers of their serial housing projects more influence on the layout and size of their homes. BBVH does not want to design homes for the average families of 2,31 person, we want to design homes that fit. Having seen one too many floor plans with the same layout, too small to fit a big family, too big for couples without kids we thought of a different solution.  Image Courtesy BBVH Architects
 Image Courtesy BBVH Architects Step one was to design a modular house that can easily be altered. Add a room, add a floor, change the layout, enlarge the living etc. All these changes could be made using the same basic module. In this way it became possible to build in the same row a small cost efficient house of 120m² and a giant five bedroom town house of almost 200m².  Image Courtesy BBVH Architects Step two was to build an online configurator that made it possible for potential buyers to create their own dream house. The software had to be very low threshold and understandable on the one hand but on the other hand it had to contain all relevant and important facts about the house like prizes of items, square meters, the building plans including the choices made etc. This led to a ‘step by step’ process in which you gradually design your own house. In the end you know exactly what it is going to cost and how it is going to look. When you are ready you print a pdf of the house and buy your configuration.  Image Courtesy BBVH Architects This first experiment with the Woonwijzer (the configurator software) was very successful. On top of € 215,000 for the basic house one chose on average an extra € 45,000 on options. This led to very divers and lively façade representing each individual family. Also the houses were sold more quickly than expected. The pictures of the project show the balanced overall architecture in relation with the diversity of the individual choices. After this pilot project BBVH kept on developing the house configurator for 20+ projects with as most recent addition in the series an html version suitable for the I‐pad.
