Article source: Arquitecnic The main entrance to the center is located in the corner of the streets Severe Ochoa and Miguel Delibes and is solved with a smooth ramp in the retreat space, so that it is easily identifiable from the street. The building is conceived around a central courtyard. It serves as orientation and allow daylight to penetrate the hole interior, both the consulting rooms and the waiting areas. The use of a building of regular and square footprint with a great central courtyard allows the possibility to control all the climate conditions. This “patio” acts as a climatic envelope and provides natural and uniform sunlight to all the areas of the inside.
The ground floor supports the most public areas of the program. From the lobby, another smaller courtyard provide orientation and a view of the sky. The new Health center is a compact building on three floors, with therapy and medical facilities on the ground floor, the consulting rooms on the second floor, and the direction rooms in the third. All floors are accesible by two stairs, one for the public and another one for personnel, located in the diagonals of the square. As we already have pointed, the building has one public access from the street Severo Ochoa through a windbreak. In the ground floor we also have the administrative area with the admission point. The entrance and other services are grouped next to the main staircase. The consulting rooms and waiting areas, which integrate the mayor part of the program, are located around the “patio” with a back-to-back disposition. This organization provides a maximum of flexibility for use according to clients wises. Both the consulting rooms and the waiting areas are placed in the four sides of the building, with the consulting rooms opening up to a south-east and south-western orientation. With an easy access from the lobby, the surgical area occupies an independent central position in the ground floor. The rehabilitation area is also located in the ground floor, next to the main access, with the physiotherapy visually united with the gym. The program is completed with an underground garage for a total of 30 places with access from the backside. A window type with prefabricated concrete shades has been used, to avoid the monotony of the horizontal windows. The compactness of the building secures a differentiated appearance in front of the disintegrated environment of residential blocks. This reinforces the public character of the center that deliberately exhibits its dimensions and regularity. We tried to counteract the initial compactness of the resulting volume through two additional features, the first one consisting in adding a one-story body that contains the access in the northwest side. Destined to lodge the administrative dependencies, this body appears in an advanced position. The second operation tries to emphasize the horizontal profile of the building, introducing in the top floor of the complex an unfolded metal box that lodges the climate facilities and that intensifies the slight appearance of the building, along with the translucent polycarbonate closings of the waiting areas.
