Henning Larsen Architects has developed a design proposal for a new museum in Vejen, Denmark, which will display the universe of multi-artist Poul Henningsen – also known as PH. The museum will present a holistic picture of the artist – not only as a light maker but also as a furniture designer, author, song writer and social critic.

  • Architect: Henning Larsen Architects
  • Name of Project: PH Museum
  • Location: Vejen, Denmark
  • Client: Development group for the establishment of a PH Museum
  • Gross floor area: 2,500 m2
  • Year of design: 2013 – 2014
  • Type of assignment: Commission

The overall concept for the museum is inspired by Poul Henningsen’s informal, original work with and view on light. The exhibition building has been adapted to the exhibited works. The round shape of the house creates a soft contrast to the rectangular geometry of the surrounding city. As a large pavilion, the building rises from the ground, light as the clouds, poetic as Poul Henningsen himself.

The building design allows for Poul Henningsen’s works to be exhibited along the inner facade. Behind this zone, you find an area of closed, dark rooms for special exhibitions. In the core of the building, a double-high atrium makes it possible to stage the famous PH Artichoke lamp or other pendants in large dimensions.

As an essential element in the vitalisation of the artist’s universe, the manufacturer of the lamps Louis Poulsen Lighting wishes to present a unique, almost complete collection of PH Lamps to the public. In addition to the lamps, the museum building will also comprise laboratories for training specialists light technicians.

Poul Henningsen’s Universe puts focus on Danish desgin, and the museum will not only attract professionals from all over the world but will also appeal to tourists interested in the internationally acclaimed light artist.
