Article source: Estudio de Arquitectura NAOS The Complex in Barreiro has been designed for recreational and sporting use, besides being a leisure and aquatic centre. It has three swimming pools: one with 6 lanes of 25 metres in length, a swimming pool of learning and other one with water beds, Jacuzzi and massage jets. What particularity stands out is its large central space linked to the sports activities and it’s a glass prism with maximum use of natural light and allows the best ventilation of the spaces.
The building has a regular and compact shape what improves thermal conditions and reduces thermal losses. It has double height spaces with a large skylight in the centre of the roof. This characteristic allows daylight over the gymnasium with the consequent energy saving and increase in efficiency of the building. The sport complex and swimming centre has solar panels in the roof for the water heating system of the swimming pools and hot sanitary water. The edifice also has five rooms of activities, one fitness room and one more for cardio activities. These new facilities house two paddle tennis courts and a outdoor solarium. The use program is carried out on three different levels. The ground floor contains three independent areas: paddle area, water treatments area and swimming pools area. The next floor has rooms of activities and a large and light room of 680 square metres overlooking the swimming pools. This room is destined mainly to cardio and fitness activity.
