Article source: François Blanciak Architect As a way to organize this cultural venue in a coherent way regarding program, light, and public space, the project re-uses the symbolic morphology of the archetypal pitch-roof house. The upper part of the building is composed of three main volumes that respectively contain artistic, cultural, and house-related spaces, and which are linked by a large triangular void. Structurally, two continuous circulation cores support the edifice and connect all the various disciplines from bottom to top.
Since the site has strict height regulations above ground but none below, the main performance halls are designed as bunkers, sunken into the depth of the lot, which liberates the ground level for public space and light. The large exhibition hall is designed as a step into the sloping topography of the site, so as to optimize the use of natural light to gently illuminate the art with a series of light wells on its roof. In terms of textures, the three main volumes are wrapped in glass, with a second metallic skin whose perforated patterns sample Lebanese poems in Arabic, French, and Greek, in order to express both the regional and international characters of the culture of Beirut.
