Article source: Planning Korea Seoul-based architectural practice Planning Korea has completed ‘Jeju Cocoon House’ inspired by volcanic topography ofJejuisland and a cocoon of living organism. The cocoon located at the center of the house provides a space made by nature that protects and develops inner living things from outside.It creates a space like an art piece by translating the round shape of cocoon as an eco structure design.  Cocoon view This seaside condominium provides a self-sustainingcreative business resort located inUNESCO Heritage Jeju Island. The circular windows of the cocoon can be opened and closed depending on the indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity, so it seems like a live cocoon. By blurring the lines between floor, wall and ceiling, it allowsa mystic and inspirational space with new perspective and can be used for muti-purpose such as private gallery, library, and party space.  Ocean view The volcanic island Jeju where this house will be located has a unique forest called ‘Gotjawal’ with mild temperature and high humidity throughout the year that enables coexistence of diverse living things. By applying these characteristics of the forest, we plan to useenvironment-friendly interior and exterior finishing materials made from Jejuto make a healthy and pure house dealing with the four distinctive seasons. Two rooms on the left and rightside of the cocoon are positioned in different height and angle to give three-dimensional effect that allows different view of nature surroundings of Jeju.  Circular window In addition, an open air pocket pool enables swimming with the feeling of enjoying the nature of Jejuisland. ‘Jeju Cocoon House’ is a high-end condominium located in ‘Gotjawal Village’ the first phase of the ‘JejuAirest City’. ‘JejuAirest City’ is the biggest integrated resort development in the history of Jejuisland comprising various resort facilities including shopping mall, casino, hotel, medical center, and new concept of condominiums under the concept of a ‘Creative BusinessLeisure City’.  Cocoon interior This is not a conventionalresort for relaxation, but a self-sustainingresort that caters for both residential andbusiness aspects. There are three different floor heights on the ground floor. The cocoon zone at the center with the tallest floor height has a courtyard that divides round shape kitchen and living room for gallery. The conference zone on the right complements living room function and a room on the left was created using landing space.  Night view from the top The master bedroom on the right gives privacy by disconnecting it from other rooms. Small atelier was created on the left using difference of floor level between 1st and 2nd floor. There is a petit library that connects to the family room on 3rd floor. By combining with roof garden and pocket pool, the family room can be extended. The first phase of the construction will be started in September 2012 and will be completed in 2015.
