Article source: Márcio Rodrigues The project was develloped along the year, and it started with an urban analysis of the area of Göteborg located north of Nordstan comercial area. The strategy was to create a green corridor, along a small river that could be enhanced and reutilized. The strategy was a sort of spine, made by a interconection of green spaces, and some common elements define it: the river, the new proposed cycling lane and the pedestrian way. The structures that we propose are modular and there is a possible extension to the global intervention: a logic that can be repeated along all the system, adapting to the conditions of each site.
After talking with the engineer, we realized that we should assume the structure as prime mean to achieve the space. Considering this, we started to design wood structures, with great attention in the joints and the possibilities linked to the details. The structures are assembled in a rail, wich allows them to move and change shape, either by raising or simply by becoming longer. Then the question was: what should decide and move the structures? At first we thought about the people, either who organizes events, exhibition, or displays, or simply the people that could freely decide how to shape the spaces and change the structures, but then we realize that this was not strong enough, we needed natural conditions and considering the proximity to the river, the flooding became the primary reason to design the spaces. So the cycling lane raises with the flooding and in the flooding season its going to be still available to cross. Then we continued to improve the system and the structures expanded and created a bridge, connecting the two riverbanks, that also raises with the flooding (see the section) and allows to cross in any time of the year. This expansion of the structure also occurs near the pound, which contains a reserve to develop the rare plant and allow the people to visit and watch it from above. The last step in our design process was to clarify within the same structure, which parts were attached to the ground, and where exactly were the movable rails (see plan). The metal joints in the model show the intention of having more permanent articulations that wouldn´t change or, at least, not so frequently. Contact Márcio Rodrigues
