2 Whites Grounds is located in the Bermondsey conservation area, a central up-and-coming part of London close to London Bridge, where the Shard of Glass and White Cube Gallery are located.
The existing building is a five-storey-high warehouse with a distinctive character and a gable roof structure that dates back to the end of the 19th century. The project comprised the redesign of the interior of the top floor penthouse and the reshaping of the roof structure.

It took on the challenge of adding a new structure to the conservation area, which has a contemporary look and uses structural glass to differentiate itself from the character of the existing building. The glass complements the prevalent conservation area roof materials – lead and slate.

The glass structure extends the shape of the existing roof to its perimeter line, resulting in an unusual geometry. Eight square, trapezoid and triangular panels of glass form the continuous enclosure of the extension. The goal post structure that holds the sliding door onto the terrace is set behind the plane of glass, allowing only one type of detail to be used for the entire glass box: a 38mm structural silicon bonded joint. In contrast with the complexity of the geometry, detailing is reduced to a minimum, empowering the material and its essential character: lightness.

This part of the project is effectively a bedroom under the stars. The room contains a spacious open bathroom, with a long Corian washbasin and a cocoon-shaped bathtub. A 6m-long chest of drawers makes optimal use of the storage space below the sloping roof. The flooring is made of 6m-long solid oak planks treated with lay to achieve a bright finish, which adds the to the lightness of the space.

A set of sliding doors creates a more open relationship between the inside and the outside, and extends the outdoor space of the terrace into the room. When open, the room feels both interior and exterior. When closed, the transparency guarantees spectacular views of London, the sky and the stars.
Marco Guarnierri was awarded an Emirates Glass Leaf Award 2012 in the category Young Architect of the year award for 2 Whites Grounds.
