House in Brito, Braga and Guimarães by Topos – Atelier de Arquitectura. Lda

Located between the city of Braga and Guimarães, the house finds itself in a large sloping terrain, part of a valley still partly preserved from residential areas. To the west, a line of water irrigates a thicket of «tiers pay-sage» and sustains on the other side a lush forest of eucalyptus trees. On this side, the cultivated fields, the ruins of a farm frozen in time, waiting to be rehabilitated. Foreseen was the unfolding of quiet lives in harmony with nature.

We redesigned the house plan on the same principle: the courtyard.
On the ground floor, the house for everyday use. Service areas, garage and laundry, common areas, office, kitchen, lounge and library, private spaces, double bedroom, dressing, and bathing.

Placed on the 1st floor are the bedrooms and baths for guests.
For stability reasons, most of the masonry had to be demolished to be rebuilt again. We took by gravity a water source to the entrance and to the central patio, and we raised the volume of the living room to let it run to the river. The corten steel denounces the addition to the initial house.

To maintain the harmony with nature, the body of the living room is completely glassed to amplify the relation with the valley’s landscape, the wooded waterfront and the cycle of its colors. The relationship with the patio adds to the biological dynamic the perfection of the bloom, the appearance of the micro fauna, the water reflections and the materials oxidation process.
There is in fact, for us architects, two ways to design a house. One is to produce objects, and the other, with objects, consists in preserving and enhancing the relations between things.
