Article source: Torafu Architects We performed the interior design of a coffee salon set to open for a limited time inside the Mt. Taikan View Lounge, atop the Hakone Turnpike.  Image Courtesy Daici Ano A three-dimensional checkered pattern of stainless steel mirror boxes stacked into a cylindrical shape stands at the center of the hexagonal facility. Since the salon was originally an observation deck, five out of six sides are fitted with glass windows enabling the cylindrical mirror box to capture the outer scenery from which the mountains and the sea can be seen. The cylinder shines in the sunlight with a beautiful glimmer while the reflection of the grandiose natural scenery changes perpetually according to the season or the time of day.  Image Courtesy Daici Ano The space inside the cylinder is an exhibition corner that features pictures of the mountain pass by photographer Banko Gojo as well as a miniature car model of the new FR-86, changing the perception of viewers as they move by giving the impression of an endless kaleidoscopic effect.  Image Courtesy Daici Ano The cylinder is expected to be disassembled and relocated at the end of the exhibition. Keeping in mind the disassembling and reassembling, the structure is composed of small units that, like a symbol, will leave an impression even if relocated.  Image Courtesy Daici Ano The space evolves around the axis of the symbol “86” with a rug marked with a large “86” logo and pink walls of the “86” theme color, and by conjuring up the checkered pattern with the black carpets placed alternately.  Image Courtesy Daici Ano By bringing out the characteristics of the existing observation deck, the Toyota 86 Pit House embodies the world view of the sports car culture.
