Lin is avant-garde in natural designs, specializing in drawing architectural characteristics out of natural elements, then applying such character to daring transformative spaces. Echo Club is one of Lin’s newest designs in China, the sound waves of music can be seen echoing through the sofas, the ceiling, the structural beams, around every corner and even within the private rooms. This space just for sound will fill you with amazement and comfort while becoming trendy Wuhan youths’ number one hangout.

The Docks of Youth

Wuhan, with over a hundred lakes and conjunction for the two great rivers, is flowing heavy with water, which has raised a city of salt of the earth, carefree people. To design a new-age club in Wuhan, it must include this Wuhan-only trait for “breezy leisures”. So Lin wondered the streets of Wuhan listening for inspiration, the street venders bellowing, the Mahjong tiles clattering, happy citizens laughing, mixed together to become this rhapsodized sound wave. Thus inspired the idea of “Reverberating Ripples” in hopes of achieving aesthetics of sound flowing into the space as freely as the rivers. Using case specific new technology Lin has created an animated facade that’s visually astonishing and hypnotizing, with its shimmer ripples of light, filling the space with a sense of adrenalin pumping atmosphere that will bedazzle the youths. For youth is our ticket to the future and trend, a mere exchange rate between what’s still cool and what’s gone cold. So in this city of “breezy leisures” Lin has created the Docks of youth.

Cloudy Dreams and Fiery Magic

The cloudy white of Lin’s dreams mixed with the fiery red of Wuhan dictated the design, such is the red of the entrance, scorched into each rhythmically formed panel with Wuhan’s passion. The matching of mirrors with LCD screens has expanded the entrance to the likes of an atrium. To say the initial idea was the red of embers, then the concept of white and red comes from the little match girl who dreamed. With each lit match she held, she dreamed her hopes and wishes; white dreamings encompassing the flames to burn longer and brighter. Through the fiery red entrance comes the white cloudy planes. The burning sound waves reflected on the monochromatic stone floor seems to play like the keys of a piano, and in this surrealistic blank canvas, amongst the free floating of cloudy sofas, is where the youth can relax and enjoy in this reality that has fallen from Cloud Nine. Youth can project their music into layers and layers of white while fantastical imagination is the perfect ‘note’ that an architect can dedicate to the young.

A Synchronic Space for a Digital Age

Targeting the youth demographic, it was a test in both idea and practice for the designer to express an experience of youthful elation.

Lin: “In this high point of our techno-info age, where everyone is status updating, tweeting,‘like’ing etc., if one could transcribe that into a physically space and satisfying the natural curiosity of people, that process within itself can be our future.”

Thus Lin, who was not satisfied with the fact that the atrium would merely be a waiting area, shrewdly included an internet bar and a trendy recording studio, provoking that digital age need to ‘’follow’ and be ‘followed’ but in a physical sense. Hence a display window to the studio was installed with an semi open waiting area facing the studio for people, in waiting, to  become ‘followers’ of amateur vocalists. Changing people’s perception of the techno-info world from utilizing real world ‘applications’, hence enriching the functions of the space while expressing an innovative way for shared experience.

Echo Club, with its Wuhan styles and youthful spirits, abstracted what’s fashionable and trendy, portraying an illusionary atmosphere though Lin’s insistence on taste making, creating this original design, in full efforts to innovate new realms of elation.
