Article source: Diederendirrix Architects On Wednesday November 20th the 2013 Concrete Awards were presented in Rotterdam. Nedinsco in Venlo received the concrete award in the new category restoration and repair. “It is a beautiful example of how old buildings can be given a new breath of life’’.
The most recent concrete repair techniques have been combined with the redevelopment and renovation of the project. The building frame has been almost entirely restored to its original form”, writes the jury. Vogel of Zwijndrecht performed the reparations, which were commissioned by housing corporation Woonwenz. diederendirrix architects took responsibility for the design of the restoration and redevelopment of the entire complex, respecting the different phases in history which characterise the building. The NED-erlandse INS-trumenten CO-mpagnie was originally a factory for Carl Zeiss periscopes, binoculars and distance meters. The complex, including the unique periscope tower and the transparent machine room, was designed by Bauhaus architect Hans Schlag and built in the period between 1920-1930. The national monument is made of concrete, steel and glass and is widely regarded as a pure example of New Building and the New Objectivity movement. After repairing the building frame and demolishing the ground floor building additions, the actual building and restoration commenced in February 2012. A month after the official opening, in October 2013, the building is now in full use. In addition to offices for the municipality of Venlo, Omroep Venlo and L1, including television and radio studios, there are 27 apartments for the social rental segment. Recently, the highest bar in Venlo opened on the top floor of the tower. You now can lunch and dine 36 meters above ground level in the Skybar, previously where the periscopes were calibrated on the surrounding church towers. The Concrete Association organizes the Concrete Award every two years. Projects receive the Concrete Award for demonstrating an outstanding application of the material.
